Think like a criminal!

Have you ever looked at your home/car/possessions as an ‘outsider’? It’s interesting to see things from a different point of view, and it’s especially easy in winter. It’s funny how many people don’t close their curtains or blinds in the evenings when they have the lights on; a person passing by outside can see really clearly everything in the room but can’t be seen from inside. You literally do not know who can be standing outside watching you. Then there are the things that give away whether you are there or not, or when you are likely to be back. Could someone looking in see a pile of uncollected mail on your doormat? Could they see keys hanging on a hook on the wall? Could they see your slippers by the door? Do you have a calendar or noticeboard that can be seen through a window, that shows when you are on holiday or away for work? Of course if you announce your intentions on various social media then you may as well put a big sign up outside telling the world you are away from home! It’s interesting to ‘scout out’ your own home as if you were considering whether it was worth breaking in – try it and see what you find out! It's a good idea to do this - thieves are often opportunistic.

i remember, @jabouk, that you wrote about 2 guys "passing through" your garden and you were quick to apprehend them.

Yes, and it's funny how different your own house looks when you take a different view!

As I experienced being robbed, I am now very careful to hide my inside to strangers.

Now, that I work as a security guard, I imagine possible events that can happen. I sometimes tell the security managers that something can happen if we don't keep an eye on this and that. I wish there was some cooperation between the neighbors, to check for strangers that get into the neighborhood, tell where they are going to, see what they are doing, maybe ask them who they are going to...

I hope children still play outside and have fun, at least until the evening. Maybe the neighbors can gather a night patrol or pay some security company to do that, to keep an eye on the streets.

nowadays so many people arrive home and go straight indoors, never spend any time outside or even see their neighbours. It's interesting to walk around an area in the evenings, often there is no-one about at all.

There's been a spate of burglaries in the village where Mumsy lives, all during the day, probably after having been sussed out by the thieving g!ts. There used to be a programme on the telly with that bloke who was formerly a professional burglar, showing how their minds worked.

Yes, sometimes walking in during the day is easier than sneaking around at night; if you look confident most of the time no-one will challenge you, especially in the sort of area where people don't know their neighbours. Anyone could just put on some overalls and look as if they are there to do some work and probably 9 times out of ten no-one will pay any attention.

its good that you did that. to deter a thief, you must think like a thief.

I always check my home from outside. From the evening to the morning I must use the curtain as an outsider can`t see what`s happening in my home.

You make a good point, most people just feel safe in their own home and they aren't.

These good things do and make sure that no one can see inside your home and do not have unwanted mail sitting around for someone to think you are not home so they can break in. If I have to go out I do not put our thing up that people can see in.
