How is this possible?

Because of the limited space I am living in right now, I've decided to use my portable DVD player, for a duo purpose. I also use it as a CD player, to save space. All I did was add external speakers to it, and it turns it into a normal CD player. Last year...I found a really nice, higher quality, Logitech sound system, for only $5 at a thrift store. I could not believe my good fortune. It really made the music sound nice. Well... Last night I wanted to go to bed listening to the New Testament Bible playing. I used the repeat, so the chapters would play, over and over. I got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, and I noticed that it had stopped playing. I thought maybe I forgot to hit the repeat button, when I thought I had... However, when I went to the DVD player, I noticed that the CD was still playing, but there was no sound coming out of the speakers. So when I started investigating what the problem was...I noticed the wires had been completely cut in half. What??? How is this possible? The wires were intact and the speakers were working just fine, when I went to bed. I keep my door locked in my room, and no one has a key but me, and the landlord, who lives miles away. I was sleeping the whole time, until that moment when I went to the bathroom. There was nothing sharp around that could have possibly damaged the wires. Did I do this in my sleep? Am I a sleep walking property destroyer, now? If I am...where is the evidence, and what did I use to cut the wires? LOL Do I have a ghost in my room, cutting the wires? LOL I tried splicing the wires, and putting them back together; but because they have tiny wires, that were separated by individual rubber tubing, I have not been able to make a connection, to get them to work again. I am flustered and bummed!!! I don't know if I will be able to find as nice of speakers, as the ones I got for only $5. No... They weren't as good as BOSE speakers; but they were still good ones. Why now??? I don't need this... I have to figure out how to get some new tires. Mine are starting to go bald, and I am slipping a little on the roads, especially when it rains. But I need my music. It is what keeps me sane. LOL Ugggghhh!!! My life just will not give me a break!! Sigh...??????

It might have been a defective piece, but how it happened was quite weird.

It is possible they were not very well assembled because the cable already broke in the past. Can you simply replace the cable and keep the speakers?

Not the way they were made. I used these speakers for over a year, and they were very sturdy all the time until now.

I don't really know what to say except , do you live in an apartment where some neighbor could have come in while you were sleeping and cut the wires?

I live in one room. Each room has it's only key. And as mentioned in my post, they were working before I went to sleep. The neighbor would have had to break into the boarding house, then bypass all the other rooms; because mine is at the end of the hall; then only picked my room to break in. Since all rooms have a deadbolt, they would have to kick the door down, which I would image...me and all the other tenants would have heard. It is a mystery.
