The day was 31st December 1993. It was another turning point in my life. My childhood dream of becoming a pilot never materialised. But I was coming somewhere close to it. For the first time since I travelled in a domestic flight inside Sri Lanka, I was boarding a jumbo jet plane. My earlier encounter with flight was as a kid and I do not remember anything about it.
I made it a point to secure a window seat in the non-smoking section, and I noted that the seat was near the wing, which gave me the opportunity to see the wing movements, which were rather interesting. I saw the wing expanding as if to come apart, the engines thundered and we were on our way. I was on top of the world.
I saw the ground getting smaller and smaller, and suddenly we were among the clouds. After some time the feeling of motion vanished and we felt as if we were just seated in a theatre, and so it was until we were getting close to Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.
