Favorite "Highway" Songs #2 - "Highway Star"

I'm always on the lookout for themes for a music series, so when @JohnRoberts suggested a countdown of my favorite songs with "Highway" in the title, I revved into action. We are at #2: "Highway Star" by Deep Purple. Interesting story behind "Highway Star." In 1971, while on the band's tour bus, in England, a reporter asked about their songwriting process. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore began playing a riff, over which vocalist Ian Gillan began improvising lyrics. The group played the new song onstage later that night. A Deep Purple classic, "Highway Star" is the opening track on the band's classic 1972 album, Machine Head. Although overshadowed by that album's legendary "Smoke on the Water," "Highway Star" did reach #30 in France, and became a concert staple for the group. "Highway Star" has been covered often, most notably by Type O Negative, Chickenfoot, Stryper, and Metal Church, while Faith No More often performed the song live. I've linked to a live video filmed during the band's Made in Japan tour. Enjoy! (Highway stardom info verified by Wikipedia)
This video is an attempt to synch Highway Star from the Made in Japan CD with sections of the Copenhagen DVD.

I think this was on the original Dazed & Confused soundtrack but was removed for some legal reason. Regardless, it's a classic.

I wonder if they didn't pay enough for the rights or something. It's used at the beginning of the first Rock Band game.

When you first mentioned you were doing this series - this is the first song that came to my mind. I'm happy you included it

This is one of our favorite rock songs. In fact this is my sister's mobile phone's ringing tone. I can still remember when our local band played this song. I'm amazed by the drummer's awesome talent. Singing and playing drums at once.

I admire drummers that can sing. Like they aren't already doing enough.

Yep, all the cool kids had Machine Head in their album collection when I was younger. I think I've seen Deep Purple in concert at least 2 or 3 times. Good times & music!!

You're lucky. I've never seen them. I have a friend that once drove from Denver to Kansas City to see them. They're his favorite band.

Yeah! Now that is something I really like to hear, old time metal rock, I remember cruising on a major thoroughfare at high speed when I was young while this song was playing Ian Gillan and the rest of the band rocks

Not a big heavy metal fan but this song does rock! Very interesting guitar solo. Kind of a "Born to be Wild" vibe to it
