Adventures in Dentures....an Update

Last night I shared the information about my dads denture adjustment that he wasn't present for. Today we have more of the story. To start at the beginning...we asked for a consultation and estimate. The nursing home agrees with us that this is a concern and staff wants us to pursue this farther. Today, my sister actually managed to have a conversation with the denturist and he gave her at least a partial answer...and because she tends to be a bit of a pushover was prepared to just let it go. Now she will be writing our concerns and sending this letter (signed by her, my brother, my father and myself) to the denturist in question, the governing body that lisences denturists as well as the administration of the nursing home. Apparently the denturist was in the neighbourhood yesterday and took a chance. Then he made adjustments based on the average complaints....staff at the home are also questioning how this is a good practice. Some of the problems my father is experiencing is due to the poorly fitting, worn out dentures he has been wearing. This will make for a difficult period of adjustment. The denturist wants him to not wear the old teeth and to keep the new ones in for several hours a day (this dos make sense) and he will come by again next week to readjust. Hopefully we can coordinate that some family member is present when the denturist appears. I'm still not convinced that this entire matter is being handled correctly, but at least we now know that we have the denturists attention. Hopefully he realizes that we are not planning to roll over and pretend this didn't happen. There will likely be another episode in this adventure before the matter is settled.

To me it seems this bastrd has been taking advantage of the elderly, hang him from his balls! I hate people who hurt the elderly so do not let up, take charge and stand uo for him and the others he will in the future mess over.

Some of this is miscommunication....some seems to be an irresponsible denturist who doesn't like to return calls. Having the governing body notified won't sit well I'm sure.....

@Morleyhunt It did not with the game wardens supervisor, nor with the chief of police when the Mayors office sent me to him, but it worked no more hunting around my land. Keep at it.

@andriaperry when I get my teeth into something...I can be Persistant. My older sister wants to just let it go...I told her...they still haven't addressed the lack of estimate and proceeding without authorization. The teeth might be necessary..but seriously a bit of open discussion would make all this seem much more above board.

@Morleyhunt is your family update a kind of newsletter you write and send out to your family?

@shaggin my eldest sister and I share an update with the other siblings after each visit. We report dads mood....health issues and anything else that needs sharing. There are 8 children. Some are more local than others and this is one way of making sure that each person is aware of what is happening. Yesterday's update sparked a large number of back and forth emails (in a group setting). Thre are often moments of laughter as we read these emails.

Each day a new chapter. My sister told me I should write a book. I told her I didn't have that kind of time. Then she told me the several years worth of family update probably needed only minimal editing to be a book....and to think that "book" is still a work in progress,

I'm glad you guys talked to the staff there and are pursing more instead of just letting this go. If the denturist keeps doing this to patients hopefully the people in charge get rid of him and hire another.

@Morleyhunt oh I know they have no choice in the matter they either deal with him or get no care at all when it comes to that I just meant whoever is in charge there should make sure who they hired is taking care of the clients needs and showing them kindness and respect not just being in it for the money!

I think maybe the denturist could learn some people skills. That would also help. The seniors are a captive client base. If he has a contract to go to the nursing home...let's face it...theses clients can't just pick and choose where they want to go.

@shaggin we are looking into the matter. We are also making sure that administration in the nursing home is aware of our concerns.

It seems you are getting somewhere with this. I'm glad you're not letting it go. Who knows how many other elderly people have been palmed off by this guy who it seems can't be bothered and doesn't care much.

I refused to let my sister back down. I told her...we can't let him get away with this without notifying those who Ned to know. We gave him a chance and to some of the questions there was no response. Now he'll have to acknowledge us.

My dad had dentures for a lot of his life because he never took care of his teeth when he was younger, It was a pain for him when certain denture clinics dont make his denture adjustments right, I'd hear his complain all the time about how his dentures didn't fit right, He was 68yrs of age when he passed from brain cancer in 2016 around Christmas, He had to have his dentures taken away by the doctor because the state he was in he would somehow swallow or choke on his teeth, So he had a habit of pocketing food in his cheeks as he was almost a vegetable state, So they had to turn his food into liquid for him to be able to eat, It would cost around over $500 each time he needed dentures replaced, And the denture clinics closed early everyday in the town we lived in at the time.

This denturist has visited him in the long term care facility he is living in. Much easier than trying to get him to appointments...we'd need to organize a wheel chair taxi...and then one of us would need to go to Grimsby to accompany him. I just wish they would give us a solid time that the denturist would be there. The. I could arrange to go (most of the time) because I need at least 45 minutes to get to the home.

@TwentySevenSins the man is 91 years old. The fall last summer that resulted in a broken hip and his unwillingness to work towards recovery made some of these issues much worse than they needed to be,

@Morleyhunt Yeah it sucks when people are disabled, They can't help it and their not to blame, It just makes it difficult when the world isn't made for a lot of things to work easier.

I have to agree with @andriaperry. The elderly, especially those in homes or without family on the premises, are large targets for scammers. They figure few of these folks have people to advocate for them. Your father is lucky he does have family who are helping him get this resolved.

The home that my dad is in is probably one of the homes that families and church are very involved in. We are pursuing it with the College of Denturists because this dentist has not met the standards of care.

Oh I hope that he realizes his error and makes good with your Dad and this whole issue. At times like this I'm sure that you'll agree that there are strength in numbers being part of a large family and not an only child left to fend for yourself.

There is definitely strength in numbers. When the oldest four show up for family meetings we intimidate by height....I'm the short one in the family....barely making it to 5'7.5".....everyone else is either close to 6' or tops that by several inches.

May be this man is now understanding that you are not ready to pay and shut up. I hope he will do what necessary and that you will be present the next time he makes the adjustments. I am curious to know more.

I'm hoping that this matter has been solved before I move (2.5 weeks from now) but fear that it could be a long drawn out process.
