To Surprise Or Not To Surprise? That Is The Question!

My husbznd and I hve a really good thing going. For starters, we have almost everything we need in the house, and probably too much stuff, when we stop to think bout it. We are also not major "romance" people. We both agree that a gift should be loved by the recipient, and finding such a gift, even if it's not a surprise, actually reflects the thoughtfulness of the giver. For example, we're both more interested in something we genuinely want, than some big grand romantic gesture.
That being said, my birthday is coming up in a week. My husband has promised me a book and a DVD that I really want. I've been looking for the DVD for years, the book was a recent inspiration, but one which he'd also like to have around, since it's an old book that he's known aout for a long time. We have pretty much the same taste in everything. We pretty much share the money around here. He earns the main income, but I have managed to suppliment it with on-line earnings which have made our lives so much more convenient. That eing said, when I told him i wanted the book, he said "just go ahead and order it on Amazon." Afterall, I have a stash of gift cards, and a way to earn points for the order. That's why the account is in my name.
Some would argue that I took all the darn fun out of him giving me a gift. I don't know about that. For one thing, the book and DVD have been in our posession since the beginning of the month (better early than late when ordering on line) and I'm waiting till my birthday to receive them. LOL Even if I'm not surprised, I'll be thoroughly excited to finally get them. That's got to count for something. LOL
For Christmas I got him a kitchen gadget he really wanted, and by the time his birthday comes along, there will be something else. Other times instead of a gift, we'll share an experience. We like to travel for our anniversary for example, because as i said before, unless it's something we really really want, we have enough "stuff."
So, what do you prefer, the romance of being surprised, or the practicality, of the predictable but PERFECT gift?

Cool!! Of course it's the thought that counts, but it's also important to know the recipient. Some one may express their love with a four foot tall 100 pound stuffed animal, not realizing that the recipient may not have room in their apartment for such a thing. LOL That never happened to me, just an example I came up with haha
