A winter perspective, now and then

In a previous life, I was the Haiku Poetry Site Manager for the now defunct writing site, HeliumNetwork.com. Here is a recently tweaked version of a winter haiku I published several years ago on Helium. I stumbled on the original today when it popped up on facebook. Enjoy. Chapped lips, broken hips Heed winter’s frozen pleasures Mischance lurks close by. Had I written a winter haiku years ago when I was a young kid, it would have gone something like this: School cancelled today Blizzard conditions they say Gloves, hat, sled, hooray! Funny how attitudes change with age. Between the extreme sub-freezing weather, the snow, ice and freezing rain, and the astronomical heating and electric bills so far, I have experienced more winter this year than any normal, aging old grump should be expected to endure! I hope all you guys are doing OK out there. Image: Pixabay.com

These are great and yes, it's amazing how our attitudes change over the years. I used to write for Helium too.

I started writing online about the time Helium started going downhill. I had a friend who was very successful there, but others were beginning to complain, so I never started down that path. I'm glad now I didn't.

It seems there are quite a few former Helium writers here on myLot. It was a great site in its earlier days.

Wow. Your photo and poetry makes me shudder. We had blizzard after blizzard last year. Right now I am delighted to report that its raining out.

I'd better not tell you about our weather. It might make you cry. I love your haiku. We sure do look at winter weather differently when we start aging.

Snow again last night but then we're in for some spring weather this coming week. I'm looking forward to it!

I enjoyed the Haiku verses and with we still had something like it though I found Helium far too late to ever use it. I think I joined a month before I left. Now as to Mildred? Discerning cat on bed raised her head and wants to know. Cat on bed no play Raises head to hear one say Dinner, Goes away. Shucks never managed a haiku yet. Ah well But yes. Once snow was a thing of joy but having walked 3 miles in it this winter I am no longer convinced with a childlike attitude,

Mildred is an indoor cat only and has never been out in the snow. From what she's heard me say recently, she has absolutely no interest in going out!

@jackalyn Mildred likes your haiku, especially the mention of dinner! For that, she will get out of bed!

I was never much of a poet. You probably saw a couple of my putrid poetic attempts. Fortunately, I wrote them under a pen name.

@LindaCPearson You would be grateful for a pen name if you wrote terrible poetry. I wrote some pretty bad articles also until I got a clue and sold some things.

I like these. It is how I feel about winter and why I moved to Florida. I also wrote for the defunct Helium. It was once great until they changed everything.

Thanks. How nice to find old Helium friends here! Helium was the very first site I wrote for. It was great in the beginning, a lot of work at times but I really miss it.

@LindaCPearson It is the first place I wrote online and the first money I made on the internet. I joined during the 'glory days' but at the end, they revamped the website and made some startling new rules. It just slid downhill after that. I will always be grateful for Helium though.

I remember when driving in snow was actually fun, if we got any that is, and I'd do my utmost to go out in it just to get a few pictures ..... now however all I want to do IF it should snow is hide under the covers because cranking the thermostat would be too expensive.

I agree, adults and especially elderly adults have a much different perspective on snow and ice than children.

I wish I still loved winter. I loved it when I was a kid and the cold and ice didn't bother me.
