Martial Arts and the feeling!

My favourite past time is Martial Arts. My sons both started at 3 years old and i started sadly at 30... sadly meaning I wish I had started earlier. I'm so nervous as I have my next belt exam tonight. Martial Arts makes me feel so good about myself on so many levels, it's exhilarating and the fitness aspect is absolutely amazing. I train with both of my boys. It's great for family bonding and so much more!! If you don't mind me asking... Does anyone else here do Martial Arts? If so what type? What age did you start? What do you feel you are getting out of it?

That's great you are doing it with your boys! I have a 12 year old daughter who has a 2nd degree black belt in tae kwon do . . . and an 8 year old son with a first degree black belt. My daughter started when she was 7 . . . my son started when he was 3 (that's a long story). They still continue to go, but we go loosely - we have a life time membership with the studio so we're not in any hurry. I like that they get that extra exercise - and it helps them mentally and socially - and if they get some self defense lessons out of it, great!

We have 4 options at our dojang... Taekwondo, Hapkido, Arnisdemano and Taichi, we pay a monthly fee and do all 4 of them, It's the best thing ever, we have watched their enthusiasm grow as well as discipline and much of their social interactions, we have also learned it helps there confidence, mine too, i have always had a fear of doing things in front of others, but now that has suddenly disappeared. My 10 year old son is going for his First dan in both Hapkido and Taekwondo and I'm only going for a blue belt in both... my son will rule me forever (rankwise that is) LOL

@Tigergirl86 You go to a nice studio with options! We were actually going to quit the sport entirely about 2 years ago . . . like I said, it's a long story. But we got in a situation that was too good to pass up, so here we still are. Your kids get so much out of martial arts - but so nice to hear you are too! Well good luck on your belt tests tonight . . . hope you all do very well!!!

When I was a teenager I got to green belt in Karate. My oldest son took Tai Kwon Do around 10 years ago and got to the brown belt. But, now we don't do it anymore.

@Tigergirl86 Oh that is really great to hear that you are practicing 4 of them. No I have some basic talents only in Shittorio Karate. Do you heard of our Kalaripayattu that is the basic one of all Kartate arts.

I don't do any martial arts. Our sons did karate for a while but don't now. I can imagine it is a great feeling to work for and achieve each level.

@rheicel It is definitely great for self defence but as we were saying in the above comments... It's never to late to start even if it is just self defence classes!!
