Humpy hapday! It's the middle of the week, but it's near the end of the countdown of my favorite songs that have the word "wind" in the title. Here's the next song on the list.
#3: Four Strong Winds - Ian & Sylvia
(No surprise to @JohnRoberts , given that I recently sent him a link of Linda Ronstadt appearing on an Ian & Sylvia reunion show...)
According to Picky Wedia, a Canadian fan poll said this is the song in Canada. It's the closing song at the Edmonton Folk Festival. It was played at the former Alberta premier's funeral.
Gee, why is an old folk song that popular?
Think I'll go out to Alberta
Weather's good there in the fall
Ian Tyson is a national treasure in Canada. Talk about a songwriter?! Wow. He's very well respected in folk and country circles here in the States as well (Bobby Bare had a hit with this song in 1964; Don Williams' first band, the Pozo-Seco Singers, covered Tyson's "Renegade;" and Jerry Jeff Walker did a marvelous cover of "Navajo Rug").
It seems that "everyone" has covered this, from the aforementioned Bobby Bare hit to Neil Young's rendition on Comes a Time. It's one of the great, great, great "national" songs of Canada.
Thanks for sharing this marvelous songwriter with the rest of the world.

The Ian & Sylvia version didn't have the "I've got troubles, woah-oh." There's a great quote from her about the song on Wikipedia: she wrote it in the bathtub because that's the only place she could escape the cockroaches. (Which makes you wonder why their version didn't have the "I've got troubles" part! )
