What do you see?

My 7 year old baby, Annabelle.

I'm curious as to what you see when you look around your city, town, or village. What do you see specifically that needs to change? Change often starts small; in a home, business, church, or school, and it spreads. What are the real needs of the people around you? If you were the mayor of your location, what change would you try to affect? I say try because we all know money comes into play. Some cities are downright broke. I have always thought in a perfect world we would depend on each other rather than the government. I have included a picture of my dog, Annabelle, just because I think she's adorable, and I love pictures of dogs.

Well I'd start using all the empty buildings we have, for shelters, homes, more daycares, and a few places for kids of different ahes to hang out so they arent out doinf bad things for free. Like laser tag and paintball for 15-18year olds. Paint and bounce houses for toddles. Etc. Why keep building when theres so many empty buildings already. And so many need homes and kida need places to go and have fun whixh not everyonw can afford

I think your suggestions are excellent, and extremely reasonable. I would think tax breaks to businesses who open stores in already existing buildings might help persuade use of empty buildings, but maybe even that isn't incentive enough to refrain from having something new and shiny.

@AmbiePam I would love to open a cheap restaurant or play around for kids and families. As this is a very expensive place to live, and not many can afford much after bills and food and cars, especially when they're families of 3+. But i'll never be able to do such thing.

I live in a town with population of 27,000. They cannot exceed 32,000 as that is City status and they have been denied that. But they continue to build homes. But where are the businesses? Our mall has so many empty store locations. They need some big name companies in there. We are considered a bedroom community but people would rather work here than commute to the city. We need more businesses here.

That sounds like a city where I used to live. The mall I used to go to there slowly became an empty behemoth when store by store closed, and locations were expanded in other cities.

I live in a small town with a population of less than 5,000. I would increase the number of buses. We have one every half hour, not enough to convince people not to use their cars.

That is something I would do here too. The closest bus stop to me is five miles, and I'm not walking that far for a bus, especially if I am carrying things to and from there.

@AmbiePam The bus stop is two minutes walk from home, but if I miss one, I have to wait half an hour for the following.

The biggest detriment to our town of four hundred surviving is back stabbing gossip. People are too busy thinking "us and them" to pull together as "we". For such a small empty town there is a lot of snobbishness here.

I think if ever I will become the mayor, I will challenge the people to make their places clean and green. The most beautiful ones will have prices like cash and it will be solicited from rich members of the community. You see, the problem in our place is that the people are undisciplined. They leave their trash in vacant lots and the stray dogs scatter them by the road since the garbage truck doesn't go around on a daily basis.

That is very smart. We have to make people care, and realize we all need to invest in our communities. I also think a lot of rich people would donate to that.

I think I'd change most of our politicians, but that's easier said than done. Seemingly they love to spend money doing studies about what they ought to do and then don't have enough money left to actually make suggested changes. We elect a city council, but it appears they depend on staff and the city manager to supply most of the information they use to make decisions. We have a homeless problem that needs solving. The churches are doing what they can to help, but the city isn't doing as much as they might be. Most of the money gets spent for pensions for retired government officials because of promises made in better economic times. Way too much is spent on services for people in the state and country illegally, and we are a sanctuary state. This means those here illegally often get free services that citizens have to pay for and don't get free for themselves. It also means we have more crime and our schools have to spend more resources on those who don't speak English. I don't see any easy solutions to any of these because our state government is out of control.

Oh no, a sanctuary city. That's not good at all. In theory, it sounds helpful, but the reality of what that does to citizens is grim.

Our small town did not have an animal shelter and strays were a huge problem @AmbiePam . That's when I used part of my land to start one. When approaching the City Council for funding; they wouldn't help. I chewed them all out including the Mayor saying, "Oh, you can spend $25,000 for July 4th; a one-day event, but you can't help fund a shelter which would help stop the stray problem?" Everyone in the room was quiet. The following year we received $15,000 from the City Budget.

That's a good question, I don't have an answer for. I don't pay attention to my city, and that's a shame, I admit. My city could do with fewer bars, but I don't see that happening. I am glad to see some cleanup taking place, that started several years ago, and changed the look of the downtown area. What Green Bay needs is someone to invest in it and get rid of the empty buildings and give them new life.

She is adorable. I like this post. It is very interesting and gets us to think and look at our cities, towns or villages. It gets us to really look around and really see what is going on. When I look at downtown Jerusalem I look at the buildings to see how long they will be there. It is very expensive to pay for rent and other things so places close and new things go in their place.

When we shifted here there were only cottages or houses but slowly they are being converted to high rise structures which is depressing. I do not think that can change and soon we will see a concrete jungle around.

I live in a very progressive city. Construction is here and there everywhere. However, The funny thing in this city that everybody seem to notice is that the government is fond of fixing perfect roads that need not need fixing.

Ugh! I know! There is a town in Oklahoma with what the town calls "sidewalks to nowhere". Money was designated for the roads, for the traffic infrastructure, and when they couldn't find roads that needed repair, they just put unneeded sidewalks in random places that made no sense.

Annabelle is just so adorably cute. I think that if I had power on a city I would meet with those out of work, on welfare and assistance and find their strengths and try to match them with employers looking for specific strengths. And I'd have pay it forward and smile days every month.

I think this town needs to support small businesses more so. We're a small town that is located right outside of a much larger town, so most people head to "town" to shop.
