I'll Never Understand Why People Give Up Their Pets

Over at Facebook I do a lot of what is called "crossposting" of the urgent cats needing to be rescued/adopted/fostered and usually from the high-kill shelters. I've come across the lame reasons why people "surrender" their pets which in all honestly make no sense to me. Here are some of the excuses:
"New Baby"..why pray tell does one give up a pet due to this reason? When I was born there was the family dog named Candy who was a Beagle…did my folks give her up due to my "arrival"..NO.
"Moving"…If one is going to move why aren't people taking their pets?
"Allergies" This stumps me since often the case is that despite having had the pet for say ten years, now all of a sudden they want to get rid of the pet due to so-called allergies?
"Too Old". I only came across such a case. The owner dumped their 20 year old cat into a shelter since the cat was "old". When I hear of something like this I sure hope karma bites them back and when that owner is "old" they are dumped somewhere.
I think the all time "winner" I came across was a guy who dumped his girlfriend's cat since he didn't like the color of the cat..a black cat. If I were that girlfriend I'd dump that guy. I'm sorry but my cat comes first and wouldn't put up with such a "person"..and believe me I'm being polite as that's not the word I want to use.
Now I've had cats ever since I was five years old. To me they are like my "children" to nurture, to love and to have until their passing.
That photo is of me not yet even a year old with Candy the family dog,

I don't get that either. Pets are like family members. I never would. I mean sometimes if there are allergies or other issues..I can see why it might be necessary..but I would try everything else first. I would be crushed if I had to give up my pet. Long time no see Pywacket!

Would you believe I'm slightly allergic to cats? Yet still would never give my cat(s) up. And LONG time ago when my grandmother who lived with my mother and myself was alive, she had bad asthma, her doc had actually told her we should get rid of the cats we had at the time. Instead she got rid of the doc and got a new doctor…LOL
Hi, there snowy…yes, it has been awhile

@pyewacket My sister is allergic to her cats too..but it hasn't stopped her from owning them. It seems like she has adapted to it though. She isn't sneezing all the time now as she used to be. As long they don't sleep in her room too much she seems to be OK.

@pyewacket I'm allergic, too, but that's what antihistamines are for, right?

I worked with a woman who was moving into a "no pets" apartment building so was going to have her cat put down. I offered to take the kitty, but she refused, said the cat was old and wouldn't take to anyone else.
When I lived in Vancouver, a friend thought she'd have to give up her cat because her guy was too rough with Skoot-chie and teaching her little boy to be the same. I gladly took her into my home and my friend could visit with her cat (who was happy to be with me).
And, of course, Harmony moved in with me in Hamilton when my friend's daughter brought home a kitten. Harmony showed her displeasure by peeing everywhere. My friend threatened to get put her down but I told her exactly why Harmony was doing that, and told her that I would take her. Harmony heard me say that, and the next day, she was at my door wanting in. (You may remember me posting about being adopted.)
(Sorry for the "bad word" that I've never heard of before, let alone know what it means.)

Some people may be dopey enough to believe the old wive's tale that a cat can take a baby's breath away. Sociopathic personalities and those with narcissistic tendencies don't think like regular humane type humans do. So self involved they have no place for animals or other beings in their lives.

I am in 100% agreement @pyewacket . Since I ran an animal shelter, I heard every excuse in the book. Since I say what I'm thinking: Allergies; take a damn pill. Moving; you can't find an apartment that allows pets? Too old? I hope your family decides to have you put to sleep when you reach 65. Color; and what nationality are you? At one time we had 106 dogs and 20 cats because of those stupid reasons. And trust me; I told those people what I thought. One time there was a lady that said, "I just don't have the time to take care of the dog." I said, "Do you have children?" She said, "Yes". I said, "I'm surprised you haven't contacted an Adoption Agency." You should have seen the look on her face.

I'm also guessing that a lot of pets are being dumped now in shelters….the ones that were given as Christmas Gifts

@pyewacket Yeah, which ticks me off. How awful for the animal that thought they were finally going to get a home.

I wouldnt get rid of any pets, unless there was kittens or puppies but then I'd make sure they went to good homes. I can understand the baby thing though as you dont know if the baby will be allergic.
