a newbie joined today, 2 hours ago.
but instead of posting a new discussion that will show up in Most Recent Discussions, he/she posted 7 spammy comments with links to sites in 7 old discussions.
maybe they think it will not be noticed?
they probably didn't know that there are mylotters who also scroll through the Most Recent Activity.
i already clicked the report button on each of those spammy comments with links.
i'm waiting for those comments and his/her account to be deleted.
but i'm glad he/she stopped at 7 comments.
maybe he/she noticed mylot is not the right site for them?
maybe he/she read these?

they're gone that same day, but it gets tiring seeing and flagging them. i wish newbies's posts were moderated first before being posted.

@JudyEv i think it's done on article sites to ensure to followed the style guide, but it wouldn't hurt to apply it to casual sites like mylot, too, to cut them off right at the gate.

@hereandthere On many sites there is a probationary period. It's a good idea.

there are members that join to exploit the pm feature, either to send you referral links, or teach you how to cheat here. some are looking for boyfriends/girlfriends, some are soliciting money. you can report them to mylot admin. give alex the username and a copy of the private messages.

I haven't come across any such post. What happens when you report someone ? Do they get a second chance?

he/she was sneaky because he/she inserted the spam in the comments, instead of creating new discussions. i'm glad you help in reporting, too.

because when you refresh anyone's profile page, you can see his/her activity and the timestamp. anyway, he or she has already been deleted.

Of course, someone who only posts responses and comments doesn't show up on the 'New User Discussions' list but, doubtless, if you reported the posts, they will not be here long!
Spammers sometimes only post in responses and comments because they think that they won't be detected so easily but also, perhaps, because they have looked for discussions in their 'niche'. Of course, Admin is less likely to notice them because he cannot possibly monitor all responses and comments. Thankfully, we have a pretty alert lot of members here who are willing to report anything like that that they see!
Another kind of clandestine spammer is the one who posts nothing at all but only uses PM. We had a few of them a while back, I recall, and I think that Bugsy was able to put something in place to stop duplicate messages being sent to a lot of people. I haven't tested it, but I believe that was what he did.

@JolietJake That would be good. Or even just a list of people who have joined in the last 24 hours (or whatever).
