Tempest in a High School Tea Pot or not?

For over 90 years now, sports teams at South Eugene High School (one of four) in my town have been the "Axemen." Now, 90 years ago, the forest products industry, logging and mills were Eugene's big employers. 90 years ago there were no sports teams for girls. We know how much that has changed now. Anyway, some students parents and faculty have started a petition to change that name to something not gender specific. Having girls sports uniforms say "Axemen" is silly at best and many students and parents find it offensive. On the other side are those alumni and their supporters, crying "Tradition, Tradition" with their own petition. Tomorrow night, in the school auditorium, there will be a public meeting. You can bet that the pros and cons will be out in force. I am sure that there will be a police presence as well. Feelings run high about these things. Axepeople has been suggested. This is funny in a sort of weird 21st century way. Any schools in your are with gender-specific names? 3600 people replied to an online survey, results not announced yet.

Its stuff like the Robert E Lee name needing- in some minds- to come off the school building. They changed it to Lee. Stuff like that is the big discussion in my nearby community.

I understand that though, those people were actually traitors and should not be honored.

Our teams generally just have the school name, so it would be South Eugene basketball team (or whatever). Of course if you had several schools with the same name that wouldn't work. Perhaps it's time to change the name to something completely different. After all they may not want to be connected to all that wanton environmental destruction. The could be something like 'the foresters' for example.

I can understand the problem with the T-shirts but I don't have any suggestions. I think some changes are a bit pedantic like trying to make mankind into humankind (I guess that's not so bad) but changing man-hole to people-hole is ridiculous. I'm talking about holes in the pavement here just in case you're going off at a tangent.
