All that talk about the Blues Brothers a couple of weeks ago inspired me to count down my favorite lines from the film The Blues Brothers. Today that countdown ends with my favorite line from the movie. Here it isi.
#1: Oh, We've Got Both Kinds. We've Got Country AND Western!
It's just not fair, is it. You have someone who barely makes a cameo in the film, with five lines...and one of them is the best line in the movie. That's the case with this classic line, a line that's more or less become part of popular culture.
The Blues Brothers are in search of a gig, so they hijack Bob's Country Bunker. Pretending to be "The Good Ol' Boys" (the band listed on the marquee), Jake (in a great southern accent [for added laughs, watch Elwood's reaction to Jake when he first starts speaking in that accent]) tells Claire, the owner's wife, that they are "the band." Of course (see quote #6), that doesn't go as planned when they get booed and showered with beer bottles as they try to sing R&B.
Elwood is very hesitant to play along with Jake's scheme. "What kind of music do you usually have here?" he asks Claire, as Kitty Wells' version of "Your Cheatin' Heart" plays in the background (proper song placement there).
"Oh, we've got both kinds," she replies. "We've got country and western!"
Yes, they really are two different types of music, but that would ruin the perception of the joke. It's a great line, a funny line, and the most memorable line in a most memorable movie.
Thanks for reading.

Sorry they couldn't remember "The Wreck of the Old 97":

Oh, you're welcome. And thanks to @JolietJake for using Briefcase Full of Blues, which inspired the series!!

I guess many people don't realize that 'The Blues Brothers' is an actual band, not just a fictitious band in a movie of the same name. Their first album...
