Does the word housewife make no sense?

My neighbor’s (she is illiterate) came to me for filling a national ID form. In the occupation field I wrote “housewife”. She did not agree with me. She told me that I have to write house maker or house director. The word “housewife” makes no sense to her. I appreciate her thought.

That's interesting, but for me, the word "wife" is a supporter, a friend, a woman... so I'd prefer "housewife"))

@marguicha I think "house maker or house director" means she is doing something significant in her family. But the word "housewife" does not like that.

house wife can be seen as a negative term - it confines women to dometic duty - house manager is better and men take on the tay at home duties in many households too

One I learned from my mother: "Domestic engineer" There are many titles for a home maker. If she's intending to go to work, that is understandable. House wives trying to get back into the work field. often have a hard time.

Maybe she didn't like that word, if they think there's another degrading meaning for them then that's their problem.

It makes plenty of sense. If she works at home or runs the house she is a housewife. That is a very busy job and important one too.

I prefer housewife because house maker and house director could have a different meaning.

It's preferable to use the word home maker. Although I don't see anything wrong with the word house wife either.
