There was a recent news about a painting that was taken down from one of the walls of Manchester Art Gallery because it was deemed offensive for contemporary minds. When I first read an article about it on Facebook, obviously, I jumped straight into the comments and expressed my harsh opinion against it being taken down.
The painting is a pre-Raphaelite depiction of Hylas and the Nymphs - a myth - about a man lured to his death by nymphs who "looked" pubescent and naked.
Here's the site:
I understood the reason behind taking it down once I've read the article. In that context, would you be clamouring for it to go back on the wall, or let this scandalous artwork stay in the basement?

Art is art. Why in the world would anyone complain about taking down a painting like that. It seems innocent enough. Look, here in america, we are living with a very divided country. And there are more and more neo-nazi types coming out and running for office. That to me is offensive. But not the painting. And besides, everyone has the freedom to express their art any time.

What has the world come to? That is exactly how I felt when I first saw this on the news and I'm glad so many people demanding for it to be reinstalled. And that is exactly the point of them taking it down - to encourage discussion/debate. This, I think, was a very genius act. Cause finally we saw that majority of the people who left their sticky note messages find the modern day political correctness and butthurtness has gone overboard. I have a feeling they will put it back.

@Theresaaiza They should put it back. Freedom of speech is very important in this world. We all have opinions and they all she be heard and seen.

@Theresaaiza Okay, well, this country has gone nuts the last year and a half. and I think we all know why. I just hope there is a way to fix the country. But right now it does look bleak.

If their goal was to prompt conversation they've already done so, but that artist had worked hard on that painting so it deserves to go back up once that gallery feels satisfied. that artist put a portion, however little, of his life into every painting that he/she does/has done. it shouldn't go in vain.
I understand that desperate times call for desperate measures... and it sounds like they were merely trying to get into the press and get everyone talking/visiting. It's sad that desperate involvement in controversial matters is what it takes to get people talking

Of course, what is all the fuss about, right? "they own it, they do whatever they wanna do with it."
However, the point is, the painting was for public display and the reason behind taking it down is outrageous as others would find. So I wanna know what your point of view is regarding this decision based on the fact that the painting featured images of adolescent girls with their chests out in the open?

@Theresaaiza Well, if now a Photo of actress doing this is displayed, it will become controversial.
That Nymph are neither respected, nor they are loved; so taken down of the painting must have to be some reason they thought.
Maybe it is a publicity stunt, or maybe they just want it removed.

@Theresaaiza If this is the reason, then this is just an excuse and not really a reason, somebody have joked it.

I will be examining the photo you've attached closely for nipples. If I see any, I will look at them closely, over and over, to determine exactly how offended I am. Then I will demand that your post be removed. After I've copied and saved the photo, of course.

And they pretty much succeeded on that one.
