I'm positive you're nuts.

So today I went to my monthly appointment with my pain management doctor. He's very efficient, so I paid my copay quickly, did my urine test, and then very quickly was brought into an exam room where he briefly talks to you, asks if things are the same, and then sends you away with a refill. Those of you on opiods know, at least in the United States, they are scrutinizing every doctor who prescribes opiods (very strong pain killers that can be addictive), and every patient that comes in with a prescription to a pharmacy. Because of that, you have to get a written prescription every month, and only after you take a urine test. They test for how much of the opiod you have in your system, to see if you are taking too much. They also test for illegal drugs. So I sat in that exam room for fifteen minutes, which isn't long except for it's unusual for him. Finally, he walks in, sits down, and asks me if I know what PCP is. I said if I remember right it's an illegal drug ( it is a mind altering drug, and feel free to look it up because I don't know anymore about it than that). He says, "Yes, and you tested positive for it." I remember reading a book in which the author wrote, "My vision swam." Well, that's what happened to me. I felt like the air went out of my lungs. My jaw dropped, but he continued. He said my urine tested positive, so they did another test to double check, and it tested positive again. So he has to send it away to make sure it really is PCP. The good news is, he told me he has seen a lot of false positives in his 30 year career. He said many medications can result in a urine test checking positive for PCP. He told me sending it off would show for sure if it was to it not. He assured me he didn't believe I really had taken it so I shouldn't worry about it. Once I left the doctor I thought about it, and if my family and friends found out I know they would laugh. The notion of me taking illegal drugs is just preposterous. When I talked to my dad this afternoon, and told him I tested positive for PCP, he said, "Ha! That's funny. What made that happen?" So he knew I hadn't done anything wrong. I just did some research online, and cannot believe how many drugs can cause a false positive for PCP. It reminds me of the lady who did a drug test for a job interview, and she didn't get it because she tested positive for opiates, they said meth. She sued and won because it turns out having poppy seed muffins or bagels can cause a false positive for meth. And that was her breakfast the morning of her interview. Has anything like this happened to you? It was very unsettling.

I was thinking about the poppy seed incident as I was reading your post! It's never happened to me, but I can totally see how your "vision swam" . . . I mean, it's crazy to think that a test would give a result like that, but you know 100% you didn't take any of that stuff.

Could they have gotten your sample mixed up with someone else's? I hope that there is a reasonable explanation to all of this nonsense.

@AmbiePam Its probably as a result of your medications interacting either with each other or with something that you ate or drank.

No, it didn't, which reassured me he meant it when he said he didn't think I took it. Because I fully expected him to say he would not refill the pain medicine until the further tests came in.

Wow! I can imagine how you felt! I heard about poppy seeds on bagels can cause horrible test results. I'm sure the further testing will prove you have no PCP problem.

Oh my, yes I have heard about poppy seeds causing issues but when my doctor tested me for a UTI in the office they said I had blood in my urine which could be cancer, yep, no blood when it was done at the lab. But, I guess you need to figure out what caused it so it isn't an every month event.

Wow that's dangerous because it could affect your career just in case. I have only tylenol and neozep because of the recent sore throat I had.

I know that several medications cause false positive PCP. Do not worry, the future tests will surely prove you do not have such a problem.

My immediate reaction was that they must have mixed your sample up with someone else's. If that wasn't the case it's certainly very odd. I hope it gets sorted out satisfactorily.

What a mess. Is the doc going to do anything with your meds cause of this?

No, mostly because he is not the one who prescribed the medications that would have caused the reactions. Plus, I think when it comes back negative for PCP he'll know if it shows up in future tests that it is indeed false.

He said it could have been caused by an interaction between my medications, or even an infection.

All the best with your test. Never be in that situation before but it doesn't sound right, almost like being accused of telling lies when one didn't do it.

Oh my goodness now that is weird. That is kind of like testing positive for heroin because you ate a poppy seed bagel.

My doctor prescribed something for sleeping that I can take. He knows I do not want to take pain killers because they are addictive and I do not want to depend on them.

Oh dear. That is very upsetting. I had heard of the poppyseed thing. Well sounds like there are a lot of false positives, you probably just ate something or drank something that was innocent but made it happen. Hope you get it figured out soon
