Accident at the Gym

I'm trying to get back to exercising again, and I also wanted to finish a book I started yesterday. That's why I went to Kennedy Club to use the stationary bike so I could read without guilt. I also felt guilty that I hadn't been there for so long because of the palpitations. As I drove into the parking lot I saw what you do in the photo. It made it harder to find a parking place, but fortunately I did. I was anxious to get inside to find out what happened, since no one had come out to the ambulance. So many of us are very senior citizens who use the club, and the first thought I had was that someone might have had a heart attack or stroke. I'm thankful that isn't what happened. Instead, there was a woman on a gurney under the rock climbing wall. She had fallen and the paramedics were checking her over before transporting her to the hospital. By the time I finished my book and my exercise, she was gone. One reason I pay to belong to the club is because I don't have a walking partner for my preferred form of exercise, nor can I exercise in the heat. I know if I am exercising at the gym and something happens, someone is there to get help and contact my husband. At my age, one never knows what will happen if one is out walking alone. I don't walk on lonely trails anymore, but stay on trails close to homes and people. How do you get your exercise? If you belong to a fitness club, have you ever been there when someone needed an ambulance? Do you exercise by yourself or with someone else present?

That is a good idea exercising at the gym where someone can get help for you quickly like you said. I'm young but am often in the woods alone with no cell service I don't worry much but sometimes the thought of being a few miles in the woods and being bitten by a snake is scary. I found out this year I'm allergic to yellow jackets as well so that will be a little more worry too. That is so neat there is a rock climbing wall at you gym.

That must have been scary with the quick sand. I usually don't have anyone to go hiking with so I always go alone. I will be taking my puppy with me when she is older and I will feel slightly safer with her there just because of wild animals etc.

@shaggin The only reason I've considered getting a dog is to have a walking partner, but I'm not sure I can handle caring for any pet, so I hesitate to make that commitment.

There is a lot that can happen if you hike alone in wild places or lonely places. You're correct that your cell phone won't do much good in such places. I almost got stuck in quicksand once by the river. Fortunately when my knee gave way I had just started my walk in the park and someone was near me and helped me to my car which was parked across the street. But one can slip and fall on slopes, or as you say, get a snake bite. I guess that's why they always advise people not to hike alone.

That is good that there are people around to help if something happens to you at the gym. I hope the woman will be ok.

I hope so, too. Her condition looked painful, but not life threatening. She was conscious when I saw her. I'm guessing she broke a leg or hip.

@Hannihar I haven't had time to go back to the gym and I haven't heard anything. I didn't know her.

@bagarad That is still not good Barbara. Did you hear anymore about her?

@allen0187 The important thing is that you keep trying.

I only walk on my neighborhood cul de sac. If anything happened to me, the neighbors would be nearby.

That's pretty much what I have to do now -- stay within my tract, the sidewalk next to the adjoining park, or the trail right behind our tract. It's well traveled. If I walk downtown I sometimes walk around the downtown park, since someone is always there.

You are very smart to do your exercise at the gym where you aren't alone. I don't go walking alone anymore just in case I fall

When I feel good I still do some walking around the neighborhood or close to where people are. I really much prefer that to anything the gym can offer.

@Marilynda1225 I do like to walk in more isolated places. I'm just not sure it's wise or safe anymore.

@bagarad it's always more fun to walk outside in addition to getting fresh air but I understand that you don't like to walk alone or where it's more isolated.

I'm glad it wasn't a stroke or heart attack. Right now I mostly hike and cycle.

Those are my favorite forms of exercise, too, except I walk and do my cycling on a stationary bike under supervision at the gym.

@TheHorse I don't have any hiking friends who hike when I'm able to join them. My husband can't walk more than to the car and back.

@bagarad Are you able to get some hiking in in the hills with friends? I love the "being out in nature" aspect.

I used to just let my walking of the dog be my exercise since we went so often. But with my back surgeries my walking is limited.

Dogs do have a way of making sure their owners exercise. What does your dog do now that you can't walk as much?

That's definitely my preferred form of exercise. Too bad you don't live closer so we could walk together sometimes. Except I might not keep up with you because I always keep stopping to take interesting photos. Of course, I might not do that if I had someone to talk to.

I walk with a cane since I need a hip replacement but they won't do it yet. But that doesn't stop me from getting exercise. Here in Minnesota I get a lot of exercise shoveling snow. I also find I can dance yet. Not anything specific just moving to the music.

I'm surprised you can shovel snow! I'm glad you can dance. My husband swam while he was waiting for his hip replacements. That's why he joined the gym first -- to get in shape for the surgery.

I belonged to a fitness club a long time ago. For now, I exercise by myself. I go running at the park or I do workouts in my room. It works well for me.

I used to go to my gym but not anymore. No more jogging either. I just walk indoor most of the time now

Is there any special reason for the change? Were you worried about your safely jogging alone?

I don't often walk in the bush any more. Occasionally a knee gives way or suddenly I'll get a stabbing in a foot or whatever so it's best I don't get too far from home.

That's why I stay off trails far from the beaten path now. I've had my knee give way a couple of times and I never know when I'll get an episode of heart palpitations that might last more than a few minutes.

I never really wanted to, but aging can change one.
