Post Partum Depression

I had suffered from Post Partum Depression for 3 years. Boy was it hard. I like most women have read about it in magazines, reading it in other womens’ words. Never giving it too much thought as of course these things don’t happen to me....... Yeh I was so wrong.
5 years ago I gave birth to my beautiful baby boy. The whole pregnancy was tough. In and out of the doctors and a few visits to hospital for oxygen. The birth was horrendous and my anesthetist lies to me about the epidural being put in. He tried 3 times and 3 times he failed but told me on the last go that it was in. I was in terrible pain but not stupid. Anyway I had no choice but to get on with it. I should say that this was my second child, so I was familiar with the child bearing process. So after many long hours I finally gave birth to my son. It was wonderful to hold him in my arms after speaking to him through my belly for 9 months and a bit. Then after a few days being at home my whole mood changed. I wasn’t happy like I used to be. I loved my son but I didn’t understand this sudden onset of depression. I went to my GP and she confirmed it was Post Partum Depression. I was gutted. She put me on medication. It took forever to work. Also I attended counseling but I always felt so stupid talking about it. Thankfully I had/have a very supportive husband who helped me get through it as best he could. I never realised how hard those 3 years were going to be and how alone I felt. I’d never wish that for any woman. Just wanted to put my experience out there. It’s more talked about now and accepted, but I know personally it was still difficult to take on board and to speak about. Just want other women to know that help is out there and there is light at the end of what may seem like a seriously long and dark tunnel.

Thank you Dianne. It was such a taboo subject and it is more talked about now thank goodness. Took long enough. Oh no, I hope your daughter-in-law’s friend will be okay. It is a tough thing to go through, not just for the mother herself but for her family. Just hope she has a good support system around her.

Thank you Alfredo. Yes it has been a challenge but having good people around helps a lot.

Do you feel better now? I put on a lot of weight after giving birth to both my children and that made me quite depressed. I still have not lost the weight 10 years down the line.

I mostly feel fine now. I had my good and bad days. My bad days can be very bad but not like they used to be. Yes I have put on 5 stone and haven’t lost it since becoming pregnant and giving birth to my son. I haven’t been able to shed the weight though I am working on it. What have you done to try losing the weight you put on after having kids? I’m currently trying Slimming World.

I'm sorry to hear you went through this ordeal, but happy that you were able to seek treatment for it. There is nothing wrong with talking about it. Sharing your story could help another mom in the future. Hope you're doing well now!
And welcome to myLot. I hope you enjoy your experience here, and make lots of online friends.
