Planning our next adventure

We are planning to visit our son in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, in May. We live in Western Australia and are going to take our car and caravan across the Nullarbor Desert and stop in South Australia for a few days to catch up with some friends before travelling on. We intended to be away perhaps several months and we’ve now decided to take the ferry from Melbourne to Devonport in Tasmania.
Tasmania is one of Australia’s six states. Australia also has two territories which are virtually states. We visited Tasmania (Tassie) in 2003 so it would be nice to return and to have more time to spend on sight-seeing. We have booked our ferry trips to enable us to have three weeks on the island.
Tasmania is separated from the mainland by Bass Strait. It is the 26th largest island in the world and has another 344 islands surrounding it. Around 40% of its population of 519,100 live in the greater Hobart precinct. Much of the island is made up of natural areas including national parks and World Heritage Sites.
One interesting fact is that Boundary Islet was incorrectly surveyed and the boundary between Victoria and Tasmania now passes through the islet. The islet has an area of only two hectares (4.9 acres) and the boundary between the two states is only 85 metres (279 feet) long.
That’s enough for one post. I’ll tell you more about it another time. The photo was taken in Tasmania in 2003.

The photo is incredibly beautiful! I had to look at the globe to see the areas you were mentioning. Looks like you are going right across the continent. It will be quite an adventure.

This bridge reminds me of the bridge we were standing on watching someone from our group experiencing the rapids, in New Zealand.
You have great plans ahead of you. Have a blast.

@JudyEv Yes. We were taken there. The travel agents ensure that we get to visit spots a country is famous for. We did the Milford sound too not to forget the bungee jumping in action (lol) And the flow work cave too. New Zealand is a place for tourists

That sounds like a wonderful adventure, one of the people I used to write with is a photographer from Tasmania. I haven't been in touch with him for a few years but he always made me want to visit.

A very beautiful scenery. I visited too many towns and cities from different countries, that now looking back, I can't really be sure if the image came to my mind was really from this or that country. A few images with fishing boats come to my mind whenever I thought of Tasmania, and I think we might have stayed at a place in Strahan before for a week or two in the past.

@JudyEv Can you tell me the name so that I could check the images available from the internet? We board at a 2 storey house looking out to the harbour, very artistically built with steps here there everywhere plus balcony inside the place. I had a hard time chasing after our toddlers at the time, worrying that they would fall down.

No, I haven't been able to travel with him before because I worked but I will be able to now. He goes to Hong Kong in a few wks but I am not going on this one. I am hoping he goes back to New Zealand, London or Australia again. I want to go to those places

Tasmania sounds so exotic from my standpoint here in Canada! Plus I appreciate the info as I know zilch about it except for maybe one of the inhabitants that could have originated from the area--- I squinted into the photograph and in this case- the devil was NOT in the details lol! (Tasmanian- that is). Be on the lookout for your striped friend when you travel!

@MarymargII The Tasmanian tiger (thylacine) is extinct but the Tasmanian devil is very much alive at the moment. This one was in the Perth Zoo.

@JudyEv maybe we're talking about two different things- Isn't the Taz Devil- a striped dog-like creature!

@JudyEv It rains in Ireland more than 200 days in a year. I counted that in my first year in Ireland. I supposed I felt so bored living there and too much time for myself. There was only an internet in the library where I went once a week to contact my family in the Philippines, Holland and Germany. It was off the beaten track but I loved it living there in a serene and awesome landscape of green.

We only met one other vehicle and it was going the other way from north to south. And yes, it was peaceful.

I will - and the Tasmanian devils. At least that's something we don't have in Australia.
