Storing Your Spices

After years of storing spices the way my mother did and my grandmother did I find out that I am storing them improperly.
I have been storing my spices next to my stove. Did you know that you should not store your spices above or next to your stove? I put them there more for convenience than anything else.
Why is it not a good idea to store them there? Mostly because the humidity, heat from the stove and the light dries them out and causes them to lose their flavor.
The best place to store them is a cool, dark cabinet. Actually if you have a large amount of a particular spice storing in the freezer will help them hold their flavor longer.
Where do you store your spices.

I didn't know about how storing them near the stove - mine are on the wall in a little rack, not near the stove but they're in direct sunlight as I didn't know about that either! x

The heat isn't good for them. My grandmother always had her spices on a shelf behind the door in the kitchen. Clear across the room from the stove. I store mine in a cupboard by the stove but not above it.

freezer. i only keep out a small 'mount 'n those're kept'n the cabinet furthest from the stove'n dark amber bottles. ya can also get a lil more oomph outta those dried wonders by lightly grindin' 'em, e'en if such's jest'n the palm 'f yer hand 'fore tossin' 'em 'nto the dish.

Mine are in a small dark cupboard, not the one I want them in but it will do for a while. I knew they belong away from the stove.

Oh, I should check how our maid stores it because I think she does too the same way as you did and for the same reason.

Mine have always been in a cabinet above the stove. Sure hate to move them somewhere else, though.

I didn't know that. My uncle stores his near his stove too. I do use spices that much. But I do have some in my pantry.
