After years of storing spices the way my mother did and my grandmother did I find out that I am storing them improperly. I have been storing my spices next to my stove. Did you know that you should not store your spices above or next to your stove? I put them there more for convenience than anything else. Why is it not a good idea to store them there? Mostly because the humidity, heat from the stove and the light dries them out and causes them to lose their flavor. The best place to store them is a cool, dark cabinet. Actually if you have a large amount of a particular spice storing in the freezer will help them hold their flavor longer. Where do you store your spices.

I never knew there was a wrong place to store them. I have them right next to my stove too.

@HazySue Yes, it does. I know my spice bottles tend to get greasy on the lids and the spice clumps together, so there is a lot of merit in changing its location.

@just4him Mine have done the same. I moved them across the kitchen from my stove and refrigerator.

I didn't know about how storing them near the stove - mine are on the wall in a little rack, not near the stove but they're in direct sunlight as I didn't know about that either! x

The heat isn't good for them. My grandmother always had her spices on a shelf behind the door in the kitchen. Clear across the room from the stove. I store mine in a cupboard by the stove but not above it.

That I knew. When we remodeled our kitchen, I had a special cabinet built for my spices. Some I do freeze to preserve their potency.

Mine are in a small dark cupboard, not the one I want them in but it will do for a while. I knew they belong away from the stove.

Oh, I should check how our maid stores it because I think she does too the same way as you did and for the same reason.

Yes, I know that you should never store spices next to a stove, or where it is too warm. I keep them in a dark cabinet far from the oven, stove and refrigerator (it also heats).

Mine have always been in a cabinet above the stove. Sure hate to move them somewhere else, though.

I didn't know that. My uncle stores his near his stove too. I do use spices that much. But I do have some in my pantry.

I love to spice up my food but sometimes it seems as though they have lost their zest.

Mine are a little away from the stove but not really in the dark - not at all in the dark actually.
