Town Top Ten: My Little Town (#2)

It was a nice day here, a little on the cool side but sunny. I walked two miles outside, which felt terrific. Before I head into the living room to continue spring cleaning I'll give you another song that has the word "town" in the title. #2: My Little Town - Simon & Garfunkel Wow. Just plain wow. Only the sweet harmonies of Paul and Artie could make such a desolate place sound so wonderful. Both men are from the New York City area, which can hardly be called a "little town;" however, there are elements of this song ("my mom doing the laundry, hanging out shirts in the dirty breeze, and after it rains there's a rainbow and all of the colors are black") that make you think of those poor neighborhoods you see in movies and documentaries. There's nothing of importance in this place, not even the singer ("I never met nothing, I was just my father's son"). It's more of a picture of where we grew up as presented in that era when we wanted to get the heck out of where we grew up. Maybe that's why I've always loved that song so much: it seems like we've all "been there," thinking we're in the most boring place on earth and looking to see how fast transportation (in this song, a bicycle ["flying my bike past the gates of the factory"]) can get us away, and how far away it can get us.
