Queue up The Count! Seven! We have reached #7 in my countdown celebrating my favorite record producers: Don Dixon. Producer/musician Don Dixon learned about producing music as a member of his college band, Arrogance, during the late 1970's/early 1980's. Oh, man, did he learn. In addition to his own albums, with clever titles such as Romeo at Julliard, and Romantic Depressive, Dixon produced some of the finest alternative music of the 1980's. Check out some of these fantastic albums that were helmed by him: R.E.M.'s Murmur, and Reckoning albums (co-produced with Mitch Easter,) The Smithereens' Especially for You, and Green Thoughts albums, Cypress by Let's Active, Places that are Gone by Tommy Keene, Used Guitars by Marti Jones, Walking in the Shadow of the Big Man by Guadalcanal Diary, and Mary Jean & Nine Others by Marshall Crenshaw. Those are some seriously good albums, to say the least, making Don Dixon one of the 80's top alternative music producers. And one of my favorites! (King of Jangle Pop info verified by Wikipedia)

You were too busy working on a Project to pay close attention.

I wonder if a lot of producers are also musicians

Actually, yes. They often contribute musically as well. In fact, other than Shirley Manson, Garbage is totally made up of producers. Their drummer, Butch Vig, produced Nirvana's Nevermind album.
