In Tamilnadu state of India, the Government has started 'Amma Moped Scheme ' today on the 70th Birthday of former Late Chief Minister Jaya Lalitha. under this scheme women between the get group of 10 to 40 will get Mopeds at 50% subsidized rates rrom the government. The women should have annual income less than Rs.2,50,000/-. Priority will be given to Widowers, Family heads and Transgenders! I am really confused if this scheme ha to be appreciated or criticized, for the following reasons: 1. with sky touching petrol rates will these women be in a position to drive these Vehicles? 2. While other big Cities are trying to fight against the air pollution by cutting short the Vehicles on the road the Tamilnadu government is increasing the Vehicles on the road to add to the existing problem of pollution. 3. Will the vehicles procured by these women will be actually driven by them or subsequently be sold in the market at higher rates to get profit from them! 4. The 50% subsidy given to these women by the Government is from the State government fund which is being collected as tax from hard earned money of a common man. Is this justifiable i would be more than happy to know your opinion bout this scheme by the Tamilnadu Government! Thanks!

Tamil Nadu government is always attract criticism for doing such activities in the past. They offered free television set and many other material things to poor, may be for increasing their vote banks. I really don't know the reality. However, they can afford many other things for women than providing two wheeler on cheap rates. That is what I felt.

I fully agree with you they have doing such election stunts from time to time to win the confidence of masses to ensure their victory in the Elections! Yes, I agree there are many things which are much more useful to women which can be given on subsidized rates! Thanks dear @Sreekala for responding!

You have good points here and you are perfectly right. Those women can profit of the offer and sell the Mopeds at a higher price. The price of petrol is high, one Moped pollutes more than 50 cars. This does not sound a great decision.

That is what happend last time when laptops were distributed freely to students in one of the states in India. Within few months most of these lap tops were seen in the market for sale! We can't rule out such possibilites dear friend @LadyDuck! Thanks!

well know why they do that...previously it was laptops, televisions..instead they can offer some jobs or skills building classes for women to stand on their own..

They should be sold to anyone and not just a certain group of people.

Yes, instead of helping those people living below poverty life to have better lives the government is making mockery of the system for its vested interest at the cost of public money dear friend @Prshnth! Thanks ! God bless!
