The tales of the decrepit made posterity believe of a Bathala who created Malakas and Maganda, the former a name for man meaning strong and the latter for woman meaning beautiful. If I were to assign the names, I would have called them Matikas (valiant) or Matipuno (undaunting) for man, and Marilag (bright) or Mayumi (demure) for woman. But of course, I am no deity who can make names up. Sigh. I would have enjoyed inventing pretty names befitting a royal people. Maharlika, or of royal blood, is most appropriate for the brown Malays who ventured the South Seas, claimed the archipelago known now as Philippines. .and dwelt in the islands. The Filipinos are earth brown in complexion (a perfect skin color), and very industrious, resourceful, and ingenuous in all aspects of life. Picture shows a man and a woman , dwellers of the mountain.

The addiction to beautifying one's self is a by-product of a Filipino trait: colonial mentality. The Filipinos are supposed to be brown, short, and lovely. The conquerors condescended the features and made the indigenous Filipinos believe the standard of the beautiful is the conqueror's features. Sigh. I am probably just one of the few who love our own brown complexion, our tiny noses, and our sturdy bones. Oh, the Koreans are worse, the transform the entire face into a face of their preference. Sigh. Just overlook that weak point that is the Filipino's.

@epiffanie I do think the whitening thing is a Michael Jackson dilemma. Do not get me wrong because I do like MJ a lot, and if I am to believe his contention, he has a skin pigmentation disease, I gave him the benefit of the doubt. But he ushered a new generation wanting to whiten their dark derma. When the Caucasians are tanning on the beach, the Filipinos are scraping their natural brown off. Gosh. A world we have now, a vanity for vanity's sake. Take for instance the Korina Sanchez face: I couldn't fathom the vanity.

@eileenleyva It is appalling that the commercial world have capitalised on the Filipinos perception of beauty.. It is worse now than when I was growing up over there in the 70s.. We didn't have whitening lotions , soaps etc back then.. But that's all you see in the skincare departments in department stores there .. So I always make sure I bring my own when I go home there .. Well, you know, I was ridiculed for my looks when I was growing up there by the same people who look like me with flat noses ..more flatter than mine .. ahahah!!..

Filipino folklore is so rich that I believe we haven't even scratched the tip of the iceberg.

These names are so sweet to say, the mouth literally delivers persons of character. And if was not under anesthesia, I would have thought of these beautiful names. Luningning, Dakila, Mahalin, Malakas....
