Is shutterstock legal

Friends recently I joined shutterstock and post few pictures on it .is it legal or spam and can anybody tell me about difference in editorial and illustrations..

I don't see what purpose they serve. They copyright their pics so much that they desecrate it. It is so irritating to watch their pic...and totally useless. I avoid them at all cost. I will never join them.
