The prom dress fiasco..

My 10th grade daughter was asked to prom this year. She was actually sort of asked in a text a couple weeks ago, and then was officially asked today with one of those promposal thingies. Oh this boy is so cute.. he got my daughter 2 packages of oreos and wrote "Prom???" on them. Oreos are her favorite, and if you know my daughter, there is literally no better way to ask her to prom than with Oreos. All of her friends are saying that she needs to marry this boy, lol! Anyway, the moment she was asked, we went out prom dress shopping. After numerous stores and I can't count how many dresses she tried on, she finally found the one. It was $170 originally, and there was a 30% off sale that day, so I paid $130 with taxes. The next day I was showing a friend of mine a picture of the dress, but I had to get the picture on JCPenney's website because I don't actually have a picture of the dress myself. When I looked at the website, the dress was on sale for $70 online!! Thankfully, I was able to bring my receipt to the store and get refunded the difference.. all's well that ends well. Unfortunately my son will also be going to prom this year and I just returned from renting his tux... that is going to cost me close to $200. Who'd have thought a prom dress would be so much cheaper than a tux rental??

That's great about the dress price but yikes on the tux! Oh my gosh, I'm going to have to save up for a dress and a tux rental on top of college funds !

Don't forget the limo, corsage, dinner, prom tickets. It's an expensive venture! I was lucky with my oldest.. he got a cheap tux, his date paid for the limo cause her family was loaded. My daughter's date this year has also already paid for the limo and said we didn't have to put any $ towards that. So I just have to worry about her ticket and shoes. But the twins will go again next year so I'll have all those same expenses all over again!

@much2say LOL.. probably! Usually a bunch of kids share the limo so everyone pitches in their share. Last time I bought a prom ticket it was $45. You better start saving up!

@katsmeow1213 I can only think what the dinner bill would be . . . I have no idea what the rates are for the limo, corsage, or prom tickets these days - it sounds like $$$$$. Do people take out loans for proms ?

Those tux rental people know they hold all the cards! I am so glad you got the difference back on her dress.

I'm sure some boys just wear a normal suit to prom.. it's crazy how much it costs just to wear something once!

Wow that is so awesome you were able to get the difference back on the dress. That is a big cost difference. I hope they both have a wonderful time at the prom. The promposal was adorable. I love how boys now do that.

Yep, it's cute. She'll go to prom next month. My son will go in May as his girlfriend goes to a different school. I'll definitely post how it all goes.

the difference between the store and online price is shocking, but the rental for a tux is even more! i thought you rent because it's cheaper, so i guess i don't want to know how much a tux actually costs.

Yeah same here! My older son's tux was cheaper to rent, but he went with something more basic as he didn't know what his date's dress looked like.

You truly lucked out with the prom dress! Too bad your son will keep growing, because you could have invested in a custom tux which he'd get a lot of use out of in the coming years. But prom night is very special, and we do what we have to do for our children.

Yeah buying one would have been a good idea, but at 15 he will certainly still grow some!

I donĀ“t think that there were proms in my country when I was young. We socialized in parties in the houses of the kids.

You got a bargain on her dress but $200 to rent a tux?? Oh my gosh, I am glad my kids are all grown and I don't have to worry about that expense anymore.
