After yesterday's country #1 song, which was also a top three pop hit, I am turning back to real country to showcase for this year's country #1 song. Actually, the difference between today's song and yesterday's song shows how diverse country music was back then: yes, you had the "countrypolitan" pop-sounding music, but you also had people like Charley Pride, Buck Owens, and Merle Haggard scoring big hits along with the slickly-produced songs. No diversity anymore, which I think is one of the big problems with modern country music. But, that's for another time. Here's today's #1 song.
1969 (Country): Singing My Song - Tammy Wynette
How much more country can you get? George Jones' wife?! You bet!! Tammy was known as "the first lady of country music" because, at one time, Jones was known as "the president of country music." That's something you probably didn't know about the Possum. George and Tammy had a stormy relationship (most people have heard the legendary story about her taking the keys to all the cars so George couldn't drive to the liquor store, so he took his riding lawn mower instead!), but dang did they make some good music.
In addition to those great duets Wynette was one of the most successful female solo acts of the late 60s and early 70s. She had a long string of chart-topping hits, including the one that most people have at least heard of: "D-I-V-O-R-C-E."
Here is another one of her classics, a love song about making music with her man, if'n you know what she meant.

And she did "Stand By Jams" with The KLF. I have it on my iPod.
Did not know that they bestowed that particular honor on George Jones!

I've been a fan of country music forever and remember Tammy Wynette very well. The 60's brings back some great memories

I place her with KItty, Patsy, Loretta and Dolly as the all time big five female country artists. Sorry, Reba and Taylor don't make the cut.
