I have never read a novel by British 18th century novelist Jane Austen. Yet, she is still immensely popular. She died at age 41 and produced only six novels, among them, "Pride and Prejudice," and "Sense and Sensibility." Anyway, this movie is about an early stage in her life, as daughter of a poor rector (sort of a congregation pastor) of a nearby Anglican denomination parish. She (played very well by Anne Hathaway) the fell in love with a pretty much penniless young Irish lad (James McAvoy)cand therein lies the story. Okay, I guess it is a chick flick, but I enjoyed it a lot. I may even read one of her books!

I've never read any Jane Austen. Or any of the Bronte Bunch for that matter. Not sure all of that class based romantic nonsense is a cup of my tea to be honest!!

@JamesHxstatic I think a lot of that still goes on today especially as society becomes more and more materialistic!!

Women sought "good" marriages back then or had no hope of any kind of support unless they came from well-off families. That was the interesting aspect of the film for me.

I'm not much for chick flicks, but this sounds pretty good.

It is really more about the place of women in that time and place.

I started reading Pride & Prejudice a few years ago but couldn't get into it - Jane Austen, for me, is one of the authors I recognise as 'classic' but can't say I've personally enjoyed their work

Thanks for a different point of view. My wife, who was a high school teacher, has never read Austen's work either.

@JamesHxstatic It's the same with the Bronte sisters for me too, everyone seemingly has read their novels but (again) I read three-ish chapters of Jane Eyre and gave up (and I am a voracious reader, just not this type of work)

It has Anne Hathaway. She can read the phone book and hold one's attention.

Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility are 2 of my favorite novels. They stand the test of time and are full of witty humor. The 1995 BBC movie adaptation of Pride and Prejudice is amazing. The Hollywood version of Sense & Sensibility with Emma Thompson and Hugh Grant is wonderful. READ THE BOOKS before watching the films!
