Ah, 1973. I remember it well. I had a crush on my 7th grade English teacher, and in the summer of '73 the family moved to Florida. Yeah, Daytona Beach was a far cry from Louisville, that's for sure! I also heard a rock and roll song that I loved, after the first 13 years of nothing but country music. And it's that song that I'm using today as my representative of the #1 songs in 1973.
1973 (Pop): Crocodile Rock - Elton John
Hey, it's Elton John day! @teamfreak16 used "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" in his "life" countdown today. EJ's turning 71 this month and he's on his farewell tour (which is expected to last three years, by which time he may change his mind ), but the double dose of Elton music today is just a coincidence.
Oh, the dimes I put into the "record machine" in the bowling alley next to the motel my parents managed, playing this song. Eventually I traded 45s with a friend for this, and my love of Elton John was on its way.
Those of you born after, say, 1975 or so may have no idea of the notion of people considering rock and roll a "fad." Yep, that's what the parents said in the 50s and early 60s. This song, with its musical throwback to the early rock, mentions that ("the years went by and rock just died...we really thought the crocodile rock would last").
Rock and roll lasted. Elton John has lasted. And this song, his first #1 song, has lasted as well.

Elton John was the example my uncle used to try to convince me to learn to learn piano so that I could pick up girls. Looking back, that wasn't such a great example.
