Smell of coffee

When I was a child, my parents didn't have coffee. We didn't have a coffee machine. But my aunt and her family was a big fan of coffee. When we attended her, I always felt the strong smell of coffee in their kitchen. I like this memory. I am an adult now and everytime I can smell the freshly made coffee, I remember my aunt's kitchen. This morning I was making my morning coffee and I stood close to the coffee machine when it was ready. The same smell took me back to my early years. Do you have a similar experience when something's smell makes you remember something or someone?

Smells do bring memories back. I love walking into a coffee house and smelling fresh coffee especially on a cold day. Sometimes I smell a particular perfume and it reminds me of my mum who is gone now.

I love your story. Yes, the aroma of the coffee brewing actually fills the senses, I love the smell of coffee, too. Like you, the memory of a loved one comes to mind. I even wrote a poem about my grandmother sipping coffee from the cup. It is probably a mushy memory but all the same, a cherished one.

@anikoonline I've moved home at least four times in four decades. I have lost many a personal stuff, including the notebook I;ve written that child's poem. I was describing my grandma and the verses went like this... Thee in the morning when she wakes up Sips coffee from the cup Does a little cooking Then proceeds to dish washing. I think I was preoccupied with rhymes and learned about free verse. The measurement ain't exact. I couldn't recall the rest of the poem anymore.

My Mom bought a Coffee Maker and would only use it every Sunday and although I did not care much for Coffee I drank it anyway to make her happy. Smell of Coffee is what I like the most of it though. I drink it but not very much.

Your comment reminded me that I read once a book and the author wrote about his first girlfriend. At the end of the story he wrote that maybe he was in love with the smell of the girl's shampoo. It was funny.

The smell of your coffee brought me here hahaha. I like the smell of rain because it reminds of my father who passed away 10 years ago. He loved to sit at the balcony in rainy days and listen to sound of water drops striking the ground. Each time it starts raining I would close my eyes and feel like he is still there, enjoying the view.

Yes, I have a similar experience. My grandmother used to prepare coffee using a Moka (we are Italian). The smell of the coffee made in a Moka coffee pot is different.

(smiling at you) I used to love coffee! There was a pot of coffee brewing at all hours of the day and night when I was a kid. Everyone who came in our door knew where the cups and the coffeepot were. They'd just help themselves. I grew up drinking coffee. When I met my first wife, the smell of coffee brewing always made her throw up, so I had to stop drinking it. (Coffee from a convenience store just doesn't taste like a homemade cup of coffee!) When I got divorced from my first wife, I bought a coffee maker and brewed a pot. I hated it! I couldn't believe I used to drink something that tasted so harsh and bitter! I still don't drink coffee.

@anikoonline (smiling) After someone (a friend) has been to my house three times I tell them they are no longer guests. They should act just like they do at home. I don't wait on them anymore. If they want something, they are perfectly capable of getting it themselves. My parents had the same philosophy... Friends are family. Yes, I have noticed that I now like broccoli and cauliflower, when I hated eating them when I was a kid. (I do prefer both raw instead of cooked, though.)

I am sure that your guests liked that they always could have a coffee. Sometimes the sense of taste changes. I can't imagine that I will hate coffee one day, but anything can happen. I always hated coconut and a few years ago I ate some chocolate with coconut and now coconut is one of my favourites.

@DaddyEvil I act the same with my friends, they are really family. Your family had a wise philosophy. I have only a few friends but they can visit me anytime, and I will share them what I have at home. Most of children doesn't like broccoli and cauliflower, but now I also like them, but I prefer cooked versions.

There are a lot of memories like the one you experience for me too. I pass by a street, where as a child it was a regular schedule thing to go to the street to pick up merchandise will bring back memories of being with my family. We live near the vicinity of Love's Bakery. When the wind is right the smell of baking bread will emanate throughout my home. When I was younger we lived near Holsum, before it closed and I could always smell bread baking. It's wonderful for when I smell bread baking from Love's Bakery it brings back fond memories of growing up. Wonderful post and wonderful memories of being young!

Thanks for your comment! These smells can really take us back to the youth. When I made my coffee this morning and had this memory, I was smiling. It is really good to have such memories.
