According to records of "Compendium of Materia Medica" : sowthistle, also known as bitter radicchio dishes, from Ma vegetables, Sonchus brachyotus DC dishes, perennial herbaceous plants, the Compositae. Here in my hometown, we always eat it directly. Now it is the season of sowthistle. In the old time, for people don't have enough food to live, they survive in the winter. And sowthistle appears in the early spring, they have food now. Nowadays, we still eat it as a bitter dish.

I thought that and all the plants that sort of resemble dandelions were edible, but all bitter, as you say. If the leaves are young enough, you can use them in salads.
