Sneeze

Despite the face mask, I still was sneezing in the ward. One of my students uttered “Bless you” when I sneezed, then repeated that when I had my second and third sneezes. This student is the one who accidentally pricked me (I made a discussion about this).
I was quite rattled with her attitude so I asked her pointblank:” What does the ‘bless you’ mean when somebody sneezes and you tell that?” She cannot give me an answer so I told her to give me the reason when we will have our duty later. “Google it” was what I told her.
This student is somewhat assuming and thinks highly of herself, but from my my evaluation, she needs more supervision. Why, she still trembles when she aspirates medicines from a vial or an ampoule.
When I sneeze, I just say, “Excuse me!”
What do you say when somebody sneezes?

I am not sure why we say bless you, I was taught because people used to think that sneezing is how people got demons out of them and if you bless them the demons won't come back. And the other is that people used to think that your heart stopped when you sneezed. Those are just little things I was taught and probably not the real reason. I would like to know the real reason though.
I always say Bless you and when I sneeze I just say "Oh goodness" because it always surprises me haha!

right, and there are really times when our heart acts differently when we sneeze. it can beat faster or it can skip a beat.

@DesirousDreamer a heart can actually skip a beat especially if the sneeze is so strong. the rhythm of the heart acts up when we sneeze strongly

@ridingbet Exactly! I wonder if a heart actually does skip a beat for most people when sneezing. Something sciencey I must learn.

that was how i felt too, when the students said 'bless you' three times.
by the way, i asked the student and she said she did not search it in the net.

@sashann when i had their attendance and while walking to IMCU, i asked her what does Bless You meant. no, i was not sarcastic at all, but i want her to learn the action she has done.

I say 'Bless you' as well.
Back in early times, people actually believed that sneezing is caused when one's soul is trying to escape the body.

my son sneezes so loud that it seems his lungs are about to go out through his nares. me as well, but only when we are inside the house. sometimes too, even if i am alone in, say a room like last night when i went to the restroom, i sneeze and saud "excuse me", and no one was there

it is nice too, to not say anything, but what if a snot suddenly comes out of a person who just sneezed? i think it is also better to put a handkerchief over our face when we sneeze.

do you just say 'bless you' at the first sneeze, or when the sneezing continues up to 3?

right on that. for us who are immune-compromised, it is always best to protect ourselves from the viruses of the environment, even from others.
i also say 'excuse me' but not when i am home, where i sneeze loud with some words, like---"AA-CHOOO-WARIWARIWAP".

@JustBhem but since you have a lowered immune system, it is still better to protect yourself from the viruses of the environment. that is reverse protection.

I don't like to wear a mask sometimes, that is why I'm so picky when it comes to being next to someone.

@ridingbet A sneeze is a "contagious bomb". I never cover my mouth with my hand (of course), if it is unexpected, I sneeze into my inner elbow.

there are times while i am talking, i sneeze, and i cannot even cover my nose. so, i say 'sorry' after the sneeze, then bring out my handkerchief to wipe any 'possible outputs of snots'.

@ridingbet After three sneezes, I stop saying it and run away from the sneezer.

and of course, just once do you say 'bless you' even though the sneeze is more than once, right?

@DianneN haha. yes, because maybe the sneeze is already a sign of a respiratory condition.

I say God bless you, because it's the polite thing to do, and what my parents taught me to say when someone sneezed. And I do say it every time a person sneezes.
I learned in school that when a person sneezes, they miss a heart beat. Too many in a row and a person could die.

@ridingbet I hope you do take a decongestant then.

indeed, it is somewhat true. that is also one reason why my cardiologist would tell me that i should take a decongestant when i have sneezing episodes. it means i might have an upper respiratory problem and this should not be for somebody with a heart ailment.

that is good. now, i believe many say the 'bless you' but have you noticed how the person who sneezes react to the 'bless you'?does she say 'excuse me' or 'sorry'?
