Your Small Things Can Help Build A Nest.

I have this habit of keeping some food and water on my window grill for the little birds, as it is of more need for them in this very hot days of March to help them from starvation and dehydration. I mostly leave some coconut shells to dry out there besides the food and water, until one day I realized a small sparrow came by, she ate, drank and then started pulling the strings of the coconut shells. It was really hard for that little body, but she kept on pulling and pulling until a single string came off, she flew off with it and again she came and repeated the same that continued for about an hour or so. Had this curiosity in mind what's the use of those strings for this little bird, so decided to keep a little watch on her as off, where she is taking those strings, and to my amaze I realized that dear little bird was working on building her sweet little home on the tree near by. So decided to help this bird, I went back home and removed each and every of those strings from those coconut shells spread them in small parts and spread it all over, then waited for her to come. She came and she took almost three to four string at once in her beak and off she went. The satisfaction was unexplainable that save her energy and time. A few days later had this old pillow of mine which I had to dispose off, but then came into my mind the cotton inside this cushion could also be a great means of nest building material. So I did removed some cotton and spread a little bit over the floor and for my amaze all of was gone next day. So guys it's just not food we can help them, it's also with the shelter. So hope you also do the same as I do, don't let things go to waste if they are of so value to someone else. Image Credit:- Pixabay.

There are a lot of things that birds will make use of to build their nests. Little bits of wool or even hair from your hairbrush. It's a great feeling to see the birds making off with stuff you've put out for them. Our birds rarely need help with food but they are always very appreciative of being able to have a drink or a bath in our two birdbaths. Here is one of our robins soaking his feet. He looks a bit grumpy though.

@nitirrbb7 I was inside the house so I don't think it knew I was there. Perhaps the water was a bit chilly for him.

@nitirrbb7 It can be really hard to photograph birds. I'm lucky that they hang around the bird bath so much.

I know that birds use a lot of things to build their nest. I put outside a little basket where I put feathers, wool leftovers and other small things that can help them to make their nests more comfortable.

Thank you, I actually learnt them from those birds or else all those things would just be landing up in the dustbin. You just can't imagine a no use thing for us can prove a whole lot for someone

You are too funny, Nitin! Sometimes, a friend comes to stay a few days with me and always offers to trim my hair. She always wants to trim it on our deck, so there is no clean-up when she is done. The birds come from all over to gather the hair trimmings and use it in their nests! (It is easy to see which birds have "borrowed" hair from me to use in their nests. Those nests look red! )

You are so kindly to do that. I've seen the birds take the hair that came off my pets when I brushed them outside. I also put out odds and ends, food, and fill our birdbaths with fresh water.

Thank you DianneN, its makes me feel so nice that each time I go on to my window they come and look at me if I brought something for them. Yeah they don't get that close but fly away instead when I try to have a close look at them. It nice to see that we have developed a trust between us I should be appreciative towards you for doing much better than I do, you even fill up the birdbaths with fresh water not many would do that usually

Excellent job done by you. We put powdered cookies in a bowl and each and every time crow would come and take some.

I used to do the same thing with my old crayon labels when I was small. Maybe I should start doing it again...

Birds operate by instinct. Yet you will be amazed of how creative and resourceful they are.
