My dad used to buy dozens of doughnuts and pass those out to everyone after a baby was born. He didn't smoke and liked donuts, so that was his way of keeping the tradition.

I think so, since the American cancer society got involved they now make chocolate candy bars with the announcement.

Smoking is kind of dying out I think. In the states it is illegal to smoke in public places and most smokers want to quit. Plus, they tax it so hard. But yeah, I remember this being a tradition.

@LadyDuck As we say in English, "Don't count your chickens before they are hatched" (You probably have much the same saying in Italian)

@amadeo You hand out nothing, you receive gifts from the family members for the new baby born. We do not have "baby showers" before, we only receive gift AFTER. This is the usual Italian superstition, never do a gift before times, it brings bad luck.

I remember when this was the custom but I'd forgotten all about it. It isn't done here but 'wetting the baby's head' is pretty customary. The new father and his friends go out for a drink or three.

I think everyone jumped on the health craze thing, so not many do it anymore.
