Do coupons really work?

I was switching the TV channels when I found a coupon TV show on TLC. I used to watch it and I also watched the actual episode. The coupon owner went to do the groceries. She bought food and different items for 800$ but she paid only 80$ with her coupons. The next lady was the same. Instead of 400$, she paid 50$. This show was made in the USA and I don't know that is it real? People that use coupon can save so much money? Of course, we also have coupons, but they are mostly for clothes and fashion items. And our coupons are normally worth 10-20% off, but they can't be used for saled items, the newest collection, etc. There are many restrictions. We almost never have coupons on groceries. Sometimes if you spend more than 80$, you get 4$ off from your next purchase. This is not too good. The ladies in the TV show have some newspaper that contains the coupons. Is there a coupon magazine that they can buy or is it free?

I do not know if this is real, but surely they have much more discounts in the United States than here in Europe. I use coupons, but, like you say, at most we can get 15% or 20% off, no more.

@anikoonline I have been many times in the United States, I have never seen people paying so little. It is possible, but not common.

Hopefully someone from the USA will find this post and answer it, bacause I am really interested in that it is real or it is just for the show.

@LadyDuck Thanks for your informative answer. I suggested that it is like some extreme sport. It is possible, but only a few people does it.

Some of them probably spend hours and hours collecting all those coupons ... which I don't have time for .. There are coupons here too but no time for them ..

@anikoonline Yes indeed... not a very productive and creative way to spend time on..

@epiffanie These people must be committed to couponing. Or it is a hobby for them.

I was thinking of that these extreme couponing people could have a well paying job with the same working hours as they work so much time with coupons.

It takes a lot of work. I'm talking being fanatical about it, and spending hours getting everything together by searching, and comparing, and more. I can't do it. It can happen, but it is rare. It's definitely not the norm. Plus, you can't do what they do at every supermarket. Some grocery stores operate in a way that you can't get those kind of savings.

So there are groceries where they allow such extreme couponing, but mostly you have some discounts and sales, but it doesn't mean 80-90% off.

It is harder to do "extreme couponing" like they have on the show..because most stores have cut out the double and triple couponing they used to offer. People who do that..usually go through several newspapers..some are even in clubs where they share tips and coupons. It wouldn't be practical for me..if I want a years supply of something,,I just go to Costco..lol.

So it is possible, but it needs many working hours, managing the coupons, etc. I realized during watching the show that even if there would be similar coupons here, I don't have enough room in our small flat to have a private storage.

Honestly, I couldn't do it. I don't think I would have the patience to cut out the coupons and plan for all of it.

@anikoonline Honestly, I don't know if I could get that much savings. I don't see how they manage, but somehow they do.

But if you spent many hours with cutting coupons and sorting them out, would you be able to get such a huge discount? Because these prices sound impossible for me.

I do use coupons to purchase milk but I do not get any discount as we get gifts at the end of the year from our grocery shop-Suruchi Bazar which is actually a mall.

Yes, sometimes we also get a gift, but it is like if you buy a bag for 120$, you get a pendant for free (and its value is 10$).

I have no idea how they get the coupons. And it is not good for the stores. As I can see in the TV show they spend a lot of time with selecting the coupons and planning the purchase.
