Credit-Debit Cards Vs. Old Fashioned Credit Cards

One of the best inventions ever was the Visa/MasterCard Debit Card. I love being able to use my debit card like a credit card, and not have to worry about the pitfalls of owning a credit card.
Unfortunately, there are still places that treat a Credit-debit cart differently from a credit card that is not a debit card. I don't understand this, because the debit cards are still associated with the large credit card companies, and there are always ways to check and see if the money is actually there. Why is it, in this day and age, some places still don't take credit-debit cards, and I wonder to whom I should write to concerning this problem? Ideas in Canada and the USA would be good, since I carry Visa-debit cards in both countries.
Anyone else encounter this problem? What do you do about it?

Actually, I haven't had an issue with using debit cards in place of credit cards. Just curious, where you on Gather? There was a Danish-Canadian on there.

Yes I was, and with the same icon too. My name is Leah Christensen. The issue I just had was when I wanted to book some theatre tickets.

@danishcanadian yeah i recognize the name and the icon to a lesser extent. It's funny, I wouldn't think it would be a problem but yeah, some merchants are particular.

@snowy22315 I'm wondering who I have to contact, to solve this problem for the whole world. If it is affiliated with a major credit card, that should be that, but it isn't.

Same here. I'm always checking my balance, several times a day, making sure everything is as it should be.

I use only a credit card, but I pay it in full every month. As long as I know what to do with my money, it doesn´t bother me. And the fact that it is a credit card makes me feel safe in case I need extra money for health issues and the like.

I see what you're saving. However, even those of us who can pay it off every month, aren't guaranteed a credit card. Some of us have incomes that cause companies to pre-judge us. Or maybe we have money, but for some reason, they don't like where we got it.They don't think it's enough of a guarantee. It's the same argument for debit carts not being accepted. For crying out loud, they can charge in advance if they want! I was going to pay for those theatre tickets at once, so if the money was going to be there (it was!) that should've been it.

@danishcanadian In my country debit cards are money (in fact you have to have money in the Bank in order to use them). As for credit cards, they set a maximum to use and it is different for each person. That depends on many things. I have a good credit card because I have had it for a long time with no problem and own a house.

@danishcanadian A debit card should be treated like cash, acceptable everywhere. I don't have a credit card, I didn't like the feeling that I was paying for everything twice!

That's what I want to do, and it would be nice if it were accepted everywhere.

Yeah, Every time I want to book a flight or a hotel.... I think a Credit debit card should be enough. Afterall, if it allows us to shop on line, it should allow us to book tickets over the phone or do anything else.

@danishcanadian I agree but they want credit cards as an insurance. If someone goes over miles or damages a room there is no gurentee to get paid for it on a debit card unless person is present to enter pin to process. Credit cards can be charged again after check out!
