Let me first say that because of some glitch here I had to spell Gweedo's name phonetically...His true name was spelled like the priest from Saturday Night Live, Father G. Sarducci for all you out there that are older than dirt like I am. LOL
As I said before these two kitties were, what I would call "soul mates" if there is such a thing in the wonderful world of felines.
I tried to keep Salem in when she was tiny, there were a lot of neighborhood thug cats and bullies that would have done her harm, except for her champion, Gweedo. He was always coming home with patches of head missing and one time had to go to the vets for treatment. They shaved one of his legs to give him an IV and what I saw shook me to the bone. His leg showed signs of scarring from previous encounters with the "thugs" and I knew this poor guy had it rough out there, but it never turned him mean.
Well, one night Salem got out. I was terrified and worried that she would be hurt or killed by a passing car as she was so small and so black. After a couple of hours sitting on the back steps and calling her, I started to cry. I was sure I had lost my "Little Girl." But not long after that something I will never forget happened.
Gweedo must have heard me crying and came around the corner to, probably comfort me. I had interrupted his nightly prowl, but he seemed genuinely concerned about my well-being and sat quietly in front of me to "listen."
I said, "Gweedo, Salem snuck out. You know how fast she is. I can see that you are tired and probably hungry, but could you please go and see if you can find her and bring her home? Please? I PROMISE you a huge treat if you do......Please????"
Gweedo heaved a sigh (yes a REAL sigh) turned around and went back around the house. Ten minutes later I heard the tiny meow of a small kitten. I sat there totally not believing my ears. Around the corner came Salem with Gweedo in tow with a huge look of satisfaction on his handsome face. I grabbed Salem and said, "What did you think you were doing making Mama so worried?" and put her in the house.
I went outside and picked up Gweedo. I kissed him, hugged him, thanked him and told him what a wonderful boy he was.
He let me bring him in the house and both were given a generous treat of ground chicken and broth. After their meal they both wandered off into my bedroom to sleep and cuddle. Gweedo stayed in that night and woke up to a huge hug from his favorite girls. I even let him suck on my earlobe as he was wont to do with my roommate's son that had the room before me.
Just like Salem, Gweedo was prematurely weaned.....maybe that was the thread that bound them so closely together.....

They do understand a lot more than most people think. If you take the time to listen they can talk to. Cats can be a little tougher than most animals, at least for me. Its that I am royalty thing I think.
