It's just fun to listen to. Of course it was 1969 and it was becoming ever more popular to do the weed. I'm not really sure if it was weed this song is about but it certainly wasn't anything legal.

I remember when this came out, in 1969, I was 15 and had no idea what he was singing about. I didn't find out about the type of thing that might be in that bag till I was in my 20s--such an innocent time, stuff like that was done in secret and nice people certainly didn't indulge! Quite a different scene just a few years later, though.
Have you read the lyrics? I guess he's trying to escape his lack of love. What a sad song, I never would have guessed.

I was 20 when it came out and a friend told me what it was about. Living in El Paso back then also meant that we got information later than many other places, heck, they were still into 50s music here and if not for the military families I probably wouldn't have found out about it.
