E as in excellent! I'd like to have recently departed Ray Thomas and the Rock n' Roll Hall of Famers The Moody Blues lead us into today's foray of E-lettered ladies songs. I can hear his lovely flute solo on "Nights In White Satin" playing in my head right now as I write this trivia quiz (RIP Ray).
Enjoy this Moodies selection with E in the title, "Emily's Song, written by John Lodge when his daughter was born. While you listen and expand your musical taste you can ponder the following clues!
Figure out these artists and songs from the clues?
1. This song is no "come on." In the 80's this tune by this English pop group was an enormous hit, going to #1 in America, the UK and Australia. The song won Best British Single at the 1983 Brit Awards. It was ranked number 18 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the '80s. The band sure ran with the song's success, for when this tune hit #1 in the US, it knocked Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" off the top spot. Old Johnny Ray, who was mentioned in the lyrics, would of gotten over his sadness when this hit reached the top spot on the charts. The song's instrumentation gave the tune an Irish folk song feel, due to a Celtic-style fiddle used in the recording.
2. This song was realeased on the band's "Revolver" album in 1966. The song is often described as a lament for lonely people. The group's drummer suggested a few lyrics which were incorporated into the song. One mentioning a priest darning his socks and a second about a sermon no one will hear. This track showed the continual experimentation of the Liverpool Lads, as the tune broke sharply with popular music conventions, both musically and lyrically.
3. This pop rock band scored big in 1967 with their biggest and best-known song "Happy Together." Today's tune was a follow up to "Happy Together" but actually was the group's attempt to record an over-cliched, silly, stupid sounding song. They wanted to get their record label, White Whale, to stop hounding them for another smash hit like that one. The line, "You're my pride and joy etcetera" was an example of this silly kind of lyric. You might also know the name of this band by the moniker "Flo & Eddie" which they used later in their career when performing.
There is our musical trivia today for E-named women. Good luck and use those clues!
Enjoy the continuing series, comment, check out the trivia answers and see if their your favorites too. And as always, thanks for reading my music post!!!
