Length of discussions

I have been wondering whether most of you like to read long or short discussions. It's certainly very easy to read one that is just a few lines long but if a discussion is something I am interested in I'm happy to read a lengthy post.
I remember reading on a different forum that people would say if they saw a post that was very long they would skip it because it took too long to read.
How do you feel? Does it put you off if a discussion is very long?

I prefer something that has depth.

I like a mixture but I don't mind it being long if it's something interesting. On the other hand if a discussion is just a sentence it's easy to respond.

@mlgen1037 I am a little bit picky as I don't want to leave a pointless comment if it's something I'm not interested in or don't know much about,

@sprite1950 thats right and if I will be wise enough to think about my earnings, then being picky is not an option.

bubblews had that 'policy' of making a 300-word post, that is why many just copy and paste their posts over and over again

Yes that was one of the problems there, too much copy and pasting.

@ridingbet How pointless. I like to write my own stuff and make each post unique.

@sprite1950 that is why many accounts were forcefully deleted by the admin, and yet, many did the same thing

Difficult to say. Sometimes I prefer long posts if I feel I want to understand what the person is attempting to get across. If too many points are covered or they go off in twenty directions at once that tells me something about the person posting but I often prefer they wouldn't. I do like short posts too if the person responds and might even develop the topic further in the comment section. The short posts that I find I'm disappointed with are "the world is ending tomorrow" then they leave the post or only respond to comments left with "thank you friend". Those are good for entertainment value.

@Bluedoll The fact it pays is definitely an incentive. I believe when it stopped there was a mass exodus which says that although people say the money is not important it actually is. I am financially secure but I'm not going to turn a little extra down. I get a kick out of seeing my money build up. At the same time it is enjoyable getting to know people from all over the world.

@Bluedoll Yes I know what you mean. I had one yesterday that just said "Yes". I'm still unclear as to whether we earn for likes here. I'm sure JJ said we didn't but then a conflicting post said we did.

@sprite1950 I suppose there are several ways of looking at anything. I find the site is socially minded and can be used that way without any thought to how it functions as a paying site but at the same time the fact that it pays can affect a lot of things.
One person used to ask me how I was doing and it was funny at the start but when it looked like he wasn't going to have any kind of conversation but how are you's became just a little boring.

it's better to skip a long post if you don't want to read it, or you don't understand it, than leave a response that shows you actually didn't read it.
i think just make sure to break long posts into manageable paragraphs.
on the other hand, some posts are too short that the only answer is yes, no, i agree, i disagree. no discussion can develop.

I agree. I have looked some lengthy discussions and thought it would be unfair on the poster to leave a meaningless comment so in this case I would pass it by.

@hereandthere Same for me. There aren't too many rules here so basically if we are nice to each other and don't post anything which violates the rules they let us post more or less what we want. Some forums have too many rules.

@sprite1950 i like that mylot has no rule about length of posts, so we can write long, write short, just as we can read long and read short as our mood or time allows.
if this were an article writing site with keywords and style guide, i would probably not join at all.

I answered a one line post yesterday. I can't remember what it was about but I was able to leave a reply.

@LadyDuck I haven't seen too many spammers here but I suppose we must get them.

@sprite1950 It happens, but most of the time the one line posts are from spammers.

One or two line posts tends to be empty. Personally I write the length I feel.

Snowdrop66, it depends on my mood whether I want to take time to read a long one or if prefer a short one. If the topic is interesting I will read the whole thing.

Yes I think it depends on what the content is. Sometimes I read a few lines of a long post and start to glaze over because it's not my thing. But there is something for everyone here.

I think for people who are not English, a shorter post is probably better.

I think sites like this are inherently geared to shorter posts. Just the nature of these kinds of sites. Even Bubblews was like that. A couple of paragraphs at most seems to do the best. Having tooled around here I see MOST people are doing VERY short posts, and so I am just, for now, following suit.

Same for me. People don't want to plough through long posts especially if English is not their first language so for that reason I tend to keep them shorter.

I tend to skip one line posts. I will read long ones....but if they just ramble on, I move on without finishing.

I think I'm quite selective but it has more to do with content than length of post.
