I think it's fair to say that we all have some kind of accent but is yours strong? I've never been anywhere that people couldn't understand me but even though I live in the UK, if I go further up north of the country it's very hard to understand what people are saying. It's almost like a different language.
What's your accent like and have you ever had a problem making people understand you because of it?

I remember posting this video created by me just to let myLotters get an idea of my accent. This was when the earlier myLot was active.

I am using Filipino language (Tagalog) as dialect so it's easy to understand here. I rarely used English here, because most of the people here are also Filipinos.

I do not have a strong "Milanese" accent, when I speak Italian people from north to deep south understand me very well. Let's say that, if I pay attention, they cannot guess where I am from. If I speak fast with friends, the accent comes out. I find very hard to understand people from the south of Italy.

@LadyDuck I am in the south west of England. People in the capital city and the south east tend to speak with only a slightly different accent but the further north you go the harder it is to understand

It's strange that accents vary even within the same country so that we cannot understand even though we are basically speaking the same language.

@sprite1950 We have as many different accents as many regions we have in Italy. If you are Italian you can usually guess from where someone is at the first few words.

Being British I expect I would notice that you are American and you would know I was English. I always think I don't have an accent but when I spoke to people from a different part of England they thought I was posh!

@cintol There used to be a lady over here who came from Arizona and I loved her accent. She was married to an Englishman but unfortunately her marriage broke down and she moved back home. I still keep in touch with her on facebook. I only live 100 miles from London, my mum was born there so my accent would be similar although not quite the same.

@sprite1950 I have a friend in London and he too has an accent, its British. I love listening to him talk. In the US there are so many different ones you can almost tell which part everyone is from.

There seems to be so many different ways of speaking in one single country.

@augusta123 Even the UK which is a small country has different accents, the north is really hard to understand for me.

@rheicel It depends on what part of the country we come from. Some accents are easier to understand than others.

@rheicel If you come to the UK usually the further down south you are the easier the accents are to understand. The north usually pronounce their words very differently so even I have trouble understanding some of them.

Yes I think we all do that. I have a friend here who lives in Arizona but she lived in the UK for 13 years and she says that everyone at home thinks she has a funny accent now!

I am very good at understanding even strong accents because I am a good listener. I have a slight accent but speak perfect English but yet there were a few times when people acted as if they had no idea what I was saying because they are just turned off by the accent and they stop listening.

Is your accent Canadian? I only knew one person from Canada but I had no trouble understanding him.

I always say I don't have an accent {East Anglia born and bred} but I think that's just a very southern thing to say! I lived in Sunderland for five years, and was in a relationship with a Mackam for four years and I was still struggling to understand the accent.

I have a little bit of a southern accent. The vet we took Lily (my black cat) to see had a thick accent. But we understood perfectly.

I don't think I've met an American I couldn't understand but maybe that's because they have lived over here a while.

@Essjayd The Scottish accent can be very strong and you said you were born there. I continually have to say "pardon" if I am speaking to someone with a broad Scottish accent.

@Essjayd I know the feeling. I once laughed in the wrong place when I was talking to someone I had trouble understanding. I'm not sure what he said but I obviously offended him!

@sprite1950 To be fair I'm Scottish
born and bred yet I still struggle with
understanding my relatives from the
North of Scotland....I just hope I'm
nodding in the right places
My own accent isn't even distinguishable as
Scottish these days...I've been called
English a few times

it's very common in China, sometimes we can't talk with each other in that condition ,but in my opinion,it 's also interesting ,it's a kind of culture.we can learn and know it. I am woking in a international hospital ,the customers in our hostipal come from all over the world,so i can hear kinds of English ,like UK,US,PHI,Africa and so on ,as a Chinese ,my English is not good,in face of this ,it really make me confused sometimes~,So now I don't even kown what kind of English I am learning.

I guess we manage to work out the gist of what's being said in most cases.
