Color Me Appalled

One of the ways I entertained myself while I was in the VA hospital in Denver was listening to a few of the local radio stations. On one, I learned that construction had started on a roof at Red Rocks. A roof. Over Red Rocks. I am very unhappy with this. For those of you that might be unaware, Red Rocks is a world famous, world class outdoor amphitheater located outside of Denver. Thanks to two large, red rocks that flank both sides of the venue, the acoustics are naturally perfect, and seeing a concert there is a great experience. U2 filmed their famous Under a Blood Red Sky concert video there. Personally, I have seen shows by Radiohead, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Echo and the Bunnymen/New Order/Gene Loves Jezebel, The Pretenders/Simple Minds, Jewel, Barenaked Ladies/Alanis Morissette, The Go Go's, Eurythmics, and Pat Benatar/Billy Squier there, to name a few. I've experienced very hot days, heavy rain, and even cold nights there. The weather is part of the experience, part of the charm of a Red Rocks show. A roof is going to ruin that experience. Nothing beats a concert under the sky, even if it is raining. The roof, which will reportedly resemble the roof at Denver International Airport, is also going to detract from the amphitheater's natural beauty. I don't like it. No sir, I don't like it one bit.
Video and sound were remastered for my favorite songs from the legendary red rocks concert of U2.

Reminds me of a line in the Statler Brothers' "Don't Wait On Me": "When the lights go on at Wrigley Field I'll be coming home to you." Then they did put lights there, and Harold Reid said on their live album, "They had to screw up a perfectly good song," and they changed the line to, "When they put a dome on Wrigley Field." Some people just can't leave a good thing be. Ask any bluegrass fan, they don't care about weather. Or ask the Broncos fans (or maybe even the Rockies fans, given the weather this early in the season).

@teamfreak16 -- it almost snowed at the St. Louis Cardinals game today!

@FourWalls - It was snowing so hard one night against the Pirates, and they didn't call it, that we went and watched the game in the Brewery at Coors Field.

A roof? After decades they are going to put up a roof? That will ruin the aesthetic experience.

It's totally going to ruin it. It won't be the same.

I'd not heard of Red Rocks before, but then I can't say I've ever really noted what venue bands play in

It's one of those places that bands actually want to play. U2, Stevie Nicks, and Dave Matthews have all filmed concert videos there.

We have a theatre for concerts in NJ called the PNC Arts center. It is an outdoor venue with a partial cover. Being outdoors for a summer concert is the best. Soaking in that atmosphere is an uplifting feeling and its like your at a large party. Is the reasoning behind the cover based on economics, people's complaints about inclement weather, or another reason? It definitely will change the whole dynamic?

I'm not sure why, but it's going to ruin the entire experience.

I went there a couple times when we lived in Colorado. The outdoor experience was great.

That's a great shame. Some people aren't prepared to put up with anything as regards weather, etc. Some of our audience only come because our shows are outdoors and so laid-back. Others want air-conditioning and the whole works.

I want to take my girlfriend because she's never been there. I just wish she could experience it as it's meant to be, without a roof.
