Well, there's this new cell phone out for kids, can't remember the name, but they only have one outgoing call phone number they can dial. It's the parent's home phone number and it's programmed by the parents. Also, they can only receive calls from allowed numbers by the parents. This phone, i'd buy to my child when they start school I guess.

As early as they can leave the house on their own or stay at a friend's house. I want my kids to be able to call me night or day if there is antthing going on they are uncomfortable with. They shouldn't have to ask to borrow a telephone if they want to call me and ask if they can come home for any reason. I feel safer with cell phones attached to my kids even if they do run up the minutes and abuse talking time.

I feel the same about them having to borrow a phone. And I really don't like to have to "track" then down especially at different friend's house. Thanks for your reply, I am going to rate you with a +

As a parent I would prefer to give cell phone to my child at the age of 16+ i.e. after the complation of their XII th std. studies. This is because once they completed their Higher secondary studies they knows how to make use of the cell phone they had.

Why not teach them how to use one? Is there a class after that school studies that show them how to use one

I would say about fifteen or so. They would have to be responsible enough to get one.

I don't think there is a certain age. I think it's when they are mature enough to have the responsibility of a cell phone.

I didn't actually buy him one, he got an old one. He got it this year, so he's 11, its only for emergencies. So far he has abided by the rules. Some how I think that will change soon.

I'm not sure of a good age but it would depend on the child. My boyfriends son wants one and he is 14. We won't get him one. He hardly ever goes anywhere but school or his mothers house. Plus he is extrememly irresponsible. He loses everything and forgets to do easy tasks that he should remember. Maybe when he is older and leaves the house more, then we will reconsider.

Thanks for your reply, that sounds like my daughter, she loses everything, break everything but now if she breaks it, she pay's it.

I say when they start driving, or when they are out on their own alot if that comes first. I feel better at that time with them having one so that they can call us anytime if need be.

I would not buy my child a cell phone. When they can afford it on their own, than they can have one. What I mean about "afford" is, that they can prove they have the funds in their bank to last atleast six months for a month-to-month plan.

Wow, that would be a good learning expierence, I felt the pressure of my daughter's wanting to go "out" without me (tear, tear) so we gave in. I regreted it about three weeks later when she had it stolen, we had to report it and got a new one, then the next day her friend returned it to her.

it depends on the child. They came out with the cells where you program in 4 numbers and they can only call them.

I think it depends on the situation completely. My daughter was away from me when on visits to her father when she was ten. I wanted to be able to contact her and let her contact me if she had to, so I bought her one. She is now 12 and has one with a camera ( a cheap one) It is prepaid so when the money runs out, she has to earn the money to buy more credit. It is also teaching her to be responsible for her actions. (If the money is gone quickly she has learnt not to sms so much....)

I've just given my eldest daughter her first cell for her 16th birthday ... it was against my own judgement as money and control can be a factor at this age but it is time for her to have these responsibilities and the issue of her safety/ security is now a problem as she will ventures further into the big world. Personally, I hate the damn things and because we live in the bush. I have no real need for one. "Thank God"

That's like my son, who wants one too. I say no, his dad says yes, because it has "a lojack" of sort. In other word's you can track his movements, while at school because all other times he is with us
