How much information do you reveal about yourself and your children?

I watched a very interesting programme on how easy it is to collect information about yourself and your children. One woman put a picture of her child up on facebook holding a football achievement certificate .. harmless you might say but from just that one picture a hacker could find out the football club he attended, his school and where he lived. Scary because I have mentioned my granddaughter's school many times on Facebook and never thought anything of it .. but a hacker can see what she looks like and the school she attends. Another common problem people make is posting pictures while they are away on their holidays .. it's telling people that your house is more than likely empty and an easy target for burglars. How much information do you give away online? Image from Pixabay

It's easy to forget that there are bad people out there. Facebook should be a safe place where we can share our children's achievements but it's not.

I do not post anything personal on FB. I have read that teenagers check the pages and when people are vacationing, they go party in their gardens, better if there is a pool. I never post photos of friends, I do not want to be sued one day for violation of privacy.

Do teenagers actually do that?! I think my neighbours might have something to say about that if they did that as our houses are all so close together! I usually make sure someone is in my house at least some of the time while I am away.

@LadyDuck How awful! They would be out of luck here as very few people have pools in the UK.

I have probably given enough away that people could find me, my husband and one son. I can't imagine why they would want to bother to find Vince and I and the son is easily found on a few sites through his own postings.

Does it bother you.? I must I was quite surprised when I learned that a hacker could find out so much just from a certificate and I often post about vacations although I have someone stay at my house when I'm away.

@sprite1950 I can't imagine that we'd be of much interest to anyone so no, it doesn't bother me too much. And it's pretty hard to keep much secret these days.

@JudyEv True. I didn't think about it much until I saw the programme and then I started to worry about how much information I had put up about my granddaughter.

I usually post my holiday pictures after I am back. I am not in the habit of posting things on Facebook immediately. And I do try to avoid giving too much information about the family.

I usually have someone to keep an eye on my house while I am away. Sometimes they stay there the whole time I am away to feed my guinea pigs so I don't worry too much.

Finally someone said something about this. I actually do not like to post much about me or anyone in my family, most especially kids. I told my husband that once we have our child/ren, no pictures whatsoever will be posted in any sites as I want to secure them and their identity. It is not that I am not proud of them but if my children's lives are at stake, I will never risk it. I stopped liking pictures of my friends with their children. Not because I do not like it but because it gives them a thinking that it is okay to risk their children. But we do not know is that there are people lurking around and would take all the opportunities to harm other people. Prevention is better than cure and I guess people do not understand the precautions of their actions. Another is posting about people with their travels or holidays. For one, I do not want anyone to know where I am. Second, I want my own time with my family or friends. Three, I am a private person and pictures are to be shared privately with my family and friends. That is all. hahaha

@sprite1950 Yes, that would be better than be sorry. Also, my husband once told me a story about his friend who had a Facebook account and where she posted pictures of her child. All of a sudden someone was messaging her and when she checked the person's account, she saw all the pictures of her child in that person's Facebook. All details of her child was known by this person and she was shocked. She then deleted her account.

I tend not to give out too much information especially when we are going away and I wait until we are home to post any pictures. I don't have where I live on FB either. You should also be careful of pictures of houses or cars because the house number or license plate could be in the shot. I keep my FB pretty private.
