How Do You Handle One Word Comments

I am never quite sure what to do. What do you do when you get a one-word comment like "interesting" or something similar. I don't want to seem picky but it makes me suspect that the commenter didn't even read the post. I find it hypocritical to give that comment a like. Do you respond to a one-word comment? What would I say "sure was" or "was it?" Do you then visit this commenter posts or do you just ignore? Is it rude to just delete it? I know I have been around a long time but this has troubled me for a while. It is usually newbies who do this and I don't want to discourage anyone but I also don't want them to think this is the way comment. I don't want to start an argument by telling them that this is not really the way to get people interested in you. So please tell me, what do you do?

I'd probably delete it if it was a response. If it is within a response thread as a comment I might let it be. If I get something like that on HubPages (I approve comments before they are posted) I deny them.

It is just a response and it seems wrong, I wish we had the deny option. Have you been on Writedge lately, I went to try to remove some articles and they took away the delete option, I am not a happy camper.

@BelleStarr I have not logged on there for a long time. But I did hear on the Harlow-McGaw Media FB page that they disabled that option. Forget what the reason was. If you want to delete an article you have to contact them and they will remove it for you.

I have not been getting one word comments, but I get certain pat phrases. I usually assume that the people do not know English well. I have given up always commenting back to those responses, but I do like them for their participation and intention. I am not sure what I would do with one liners.

I sometimes assume the people who give one word answers don't have English as their first language. Sometimes I think they might not understand, so they write something that is sure to fit whatever it was about, such as "interesting" . But maybe that is my Pollyanna outlook on it. Because I get why it's annoying. I mean you put yourself out there, and then their answer is so glib.

You can be Polly and I can be Anna. I frequently describe myself as a Pollyanna, too. We approach this in a similar fashion.

@BelleStarr hmm, until you said this to Jeff, I didn't realize this was an older post. And upon reading it again I realized he answered as stated.

If it's a newbie I might just 'like' it but perhaps I won't in future. I sort of see 'like' as an acknowledgement. If I know their English is quite poor I might try to be encouraging with a short comment. My older friends here don't usually do this but they'd be forgiven. Some posts can be hard to respond to.

My first response would be rechecking my post...if I have posted anything wrong to get such silly response! Having got conformed that I have done a right discussion and despite that I am getting such responses...I just reply them with simple ---'Thanks!' @BelleStarr ! I think this type of people may have the idea that anything they post they would get paid for it!

@BelleStarr , In fact I think that is what we are here for! Just saying , 'Good' , 'Impresive' or 'Wonderful' makes no sense ....on the contrary the person who is initiating the discussion get fused by such responses! Thanks!

Thank you for taking the time to comment. This is a thorny issue and when I read a post I always make a comment of at least a sentence.

I might ignore it, I rarely met a post using one word, on average a few words except new member.

Yes I think one word is not really an adequate comment.

Depends really because sometimes I thread a whole line of conversation with whatever word comes up and I have to say I don´t always do that.

@BelleStarr It all depends if I want to make it a conversation and I am not always that way inclined either.

Maybe some are not into interacting that much .. And if they are newbies, they don't know yet how this site works ..

True but it is hard to make much impact with only one word.

What I do varies. Sometimes I will say "hey, did you even read my post? or something like it. That usually happens when I'm already having a bad day. Other times I will ignore it. Sometimes I'll give it a like, if I think they were "trying" and weren't being rude, inconsiderate, or had not even read the post. Sometimes I will say. "Hey, welcome to the site. Ya know, small comments like this aren't generally appreciated and doesn't get a conversation going which won't earn you, or I, any money." It just varies.

@BelleStarr Yes, we can't really treat each case the same, that's for sure.

I think it is a good idea to handle each comment differently, it helps newbies if we tell them it isn't a good idea.

You can suggest to read the "Earning Program FAQ", especially the paragraph that says: How much can I earn with each discussion, response or comment? This all depends on how interesting and valuable the myLot community considers it. The more that other myLot users interact with what you post, the more money it will make. If no one reads what you wrote, interacts with it, or otherwise considers it interesting, then you likely won't earn anything.

The only time I've sent a one word comment was "Amen!" But, I agree that most comments should be more than one word.

Let's face it, anyone can come up with more than just one word as a comment, otherwise it is better to not comment at all.

If I got any I would look at their activity to see if that's their normal response. Then I might try to instruct them that if they're hoping to make money here having a sentence would promote a discussion more than a one works comment. If it continues to happen, it's like the comment to show I'd seen it but not interact further.

Nothing...that’s what I do. Just kidding... It usually is a newbie so I do go to their page, read a post and usually write a pretty big comment...but I don’t go back unless they come visit me again...

Just say thanks and keep in mind this particular reader isn't your faithful follower, don't even read his or her posts either. Since the reader isn't sincere
