Our featured video song today is The Beatles "Hey Jude." I remember when it came out, what a commotion. Who records 7 minute songs so popular that radio stations play the tune in its entirety? And it was a classic track! At the time it was the longest song ever released as a single. Of course I do remember another long song released in the same year, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly.
So, listen to this wonderful song inspired by John's son Julian as you decipher those mystery songs and artists....
Do you know the answers to the following clues?
1. This song was recorded by 4 lads from Liverpool. The artist dedicated this tune to Yoko and to his mother, who was struck and killed by a car driven by an off-duty police officer on July 15, 1958. The musician named his child after her. The song's title is also the same first name of a famous female chef. This tune was recorded live and with an acoustic guitar. There were no other group members who played on this track. It was the artists only solo effort with the group.
2. This power pop band of the 80's hit it big with this J-named lady song which also included a telephone # in the title. The California based band's tune peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song's title became part of a prank where you would call the number and ask for this particular girl. One final clue to the group's name is needed here, pay attention now! There was a time when "spectator shoes" were the rage. These shoes were made with dual colors (tones).
3. At the age of 16 (in 1963) she recorded the pop hit "It's My Party." This J-titled tune was released on the artist's first album I'll Cry If I Want To. Most of the songs on the album dealt with a "crying theme". The single reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #10 on the Billboard R&B singles chart. She also composed songs for the soundtrack of the 1980 film "Fame," with her brother Michael, for which she received an Academy Award nomination.
4. The group's founding member and leader was killed in a Motorcycle accident in 1971. He was a big asset to Eric Clapton, playing with him on the artist's "Derek and the Dominoes" album. Written by guitarist Dickey Betts, the song is named after his daughter. This is an instrumental song that had little chart success, but was included as part of the band's #1 album Brothers and Sisters.
Honorable Mention- Ozark Mountain Daredevils- This song is inspired by someone they met in Los Angeles who was strung out on drugs. This Southern rock/country rock band formed in 1972 in Springfield, Missouri. They are most widely known for their singles "If You Wanna Get to Heaven" and this mystery song.
There is our musical trivia today for J-named women songs. Good luck and use those clues!

Those Devils — they had two opposite ends of the Ozark Mountains with those songs, didn’t they? “If You Wanna Get to Heaven” was a great rocking song, and “Jackie Blue” was mid-tempo. I remember JB getting a lot of airplay in 75, the year I started listening to rock and roll.
Speaking of the 70s, those peach-eating brothers from Macon proved with that great instrumental song that “charts” didn’t mean much back then. Berry Oakley, the bass player for the ABB, was also killed in a wreck not too far from where Duane’s accident happened. (And, as we were discussing Boz Scaggs in the last trivia post, Boz’s song “Loan Me a Dime” is frequently featured on Duane anthologies, because Duane played the fire out of guitar on that song!)
I’ve always thought John didn’t care much about anything, but that song shows he definitely cared about his mother.
Too bad she didn’t tour with John Fred and His Playboy Band, or they could have mashed those songs together as Judy’s Turn to Cry with Glasses! She was on an episode of Batman as one of Catwoman’s henchmen (hench woman, in this case), and she lip synced “California Nights” on the episode.
That’s a real catchy song....but lyrically, it annoys me: a guy who believes what he reads on a bathroom wall (“I got your number on the wall....for a good time, for a good time call!”)????? But yeah, I sing along with it when I hear it.

@dgobucks226 -- I rooted for the Riddler as a kid. I thought he was so much cooler than Batman.
(But only Frank Gorshin...never cared for the one time John Astin played the Riddler in the third season.)

Thanks so much for the additional info! I really enjoyed reading it! Very insightful and cleverly written
Judy almost made this list but I went with Lesley's song instead. She charted more than the Playboys. They really did play the heck out of Ms. Blue. Not usually a big instrumental fan but that Allman's J song rocks! "Frankenstein" by Edgar Winter was also a great instrumental tune. Oh, and btw, I was a big "Batman" fan! Frank Gorshin was a terrific bad guy character

I know a complete different story about "Hey Jude" that was released in was released in 1968, the first single from the Beatles' record label Apple Records. The first version (written by Paul McCartney) was "Hey Jules" to comfort the son of John Lennon (Julian), when his parent divorced.

Yes, that's right! Paul was at the piano singing hey Jules, working on the lyrics but it just didn't fit. So he changed the lyric to Jude.
Song #1 was written for John's mother and was called "Julia." Very pretty number.
Julia was written by John Lennon for his mother Half of what I say is meaningless But I say it just to reach you, Julia Julia, Julia, oceanchild, calls me So...
