In honor of 4/20 national ganja day, it is time to roll up the cult classic “Smoke Two Joints” by the Toyes. The American reggae band came from Grant’s Pass, Oregon and led by brothers Jean-Christophe Kay aka “Mawg” and Michael Kay aka “Sky.” The song was conceived when the brothers were living and working in Hawaii and began an improv at a herb party. They later completed lyrics with herb aid while sitting underneath a tree. The Kay’s put together the band that would become the Toyes and self recorded the song. The brothers hustled the song wherever they could and “Smoke Two Joints” eventually reached alternative radio stations like KROQ in Los Angeles and an underground song legend was born. “Smoke Two Joints” appears on their “TaTard” album and 1998 “Homegrown” soundtrack. The song is the only notable tune they ever did but those royalties keep flowing in thanks to movie and TV use and numerous covers including the best known by Sublime on their 1992 debut album “40oz to Freedom.” The Toyes continue performing to this day and advocating marijuana use.
The Toyes are great, buy their CDs or check them out on iTunes. [LYRICS] I smoke two joints in the morning, I smoke two joints at night I smoke two joints in...
