I swear that this is just a coincidence. I swear, my intention was not to use the same band twice this morning. We are at #44 b in today's Play it Again, Sam discussion, the "cover:" The Sisters of Mercy's cover of The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter."
Early on, when goth legends The Sisters of Mercy were a singles band, they often did cover versions of songs to use as B-Sides. And they had great taste in covers, redoing songs by Dolly Parton, Hot Chocolate, and The Stooges. One particular song was right up their alley: "Gimme Shelter."
The Sisters' version of "Gimme Shelter" was recorded and released as the B-Side of their 1983 12-inch single, "Temple of Love," which is difficult to find in it's original vinyl format. Luckily, both tracks were made available on the band's 1992 singles compilation, Some Girls Wander by Mistake.
As befitting such a classic, "Gimme Shelter" has been covered numerous times. Notable versions have been released by Merry Clayton, who provided the backup vocals on the Stones' original, Puddle of Mudd, Grand Funk Railroad, Patti Smith, Voice of the Beehive, Hawkwind with Samantha Fox, 808 State, and Pop Will Eat Itself.
If I could sing or play an instrument, I probably would have covered it, too!

This version isn't real well known outside of goth circles.
