I did teach ESL online several years ago and was earning $1000 a month. But I didn't register in any online websites at all nor was I under any agency or school. The students directly contacted me, sent me an email and asked if they could study. They send their payment directly to me through PayPal. My students increased due to referrals by other students.
I stopped three years ago because I was too busy and had no time to teach them anymore.
Why are you having doubts?
